B-Layer Replacement Difficulties in finding a baseline for the B-layer replacement Task Force. Scenarios: • “Old: Scenarios. The one presented at the B-layer workshop last September (Insertable and Replacement) are less favorite today. “Replacement” “ Insertable” • “New” Scenarios. A challenging “exotic”in situ replacement or a “simple” low mass 2 hit system are today more “à la mode”. BARREL BPSS Beam Pipe EXTRACT BEAM PIPE C. B-layer task force Mandate Practical constraints: • Basic R&D for the PIXEL upgrade must be encouraged to continue during this process and as part of the revised plan. • The b-layer replacement budget line in M&O must be kept open, in all scenarios there is a well-defined inner layer that will be a focus for development and early change. • The PIXEL upgrade community must be kept together working on a common framework as a result of any new plan. Timescale: Maximum 6 months. Recommended work style of task force: • Use existing B-layer, PO and upgrade organizations, TC as much as possible to carry out these studies and avoid parallel structures. • Document work and process under Upgrade heading on WEB. • Final product is a report with findings, conclusions and recommendations. B-layer Task Force Composition The group is lead by: Allan Clark and Giuseppe Mornacchi. First meeting last Tuesday. Pixels engineering D. Giugni N. Hartman Pixel M. Garcia-Sciveres N. Wermes Software A. Rozanov S. Dong Upgrade G. Darbo D. Lissauer N. Hessey A. Catinaccio Safety O. Beltramello Ex-officio M. Nessi, L. Rossi, K. Einsweiler, S. Stapnes Propose to meet every second week, minutes & action list from chairpersons. Presentations on indico under “Upgrades for High Luminosity/Working Groups and R&D projects” tree. Pixel Upgrade Highlights (1) First Pixel Upgrade Meeting - 1/2/2008: • http: //indico. cern. ch/conference. Display. py? conf. Id=27691 Pixel layout for SLHC • The "Straw. Man 07" was presented in the Pixel Upgrade General meeting by Nigel and together with some preliminary results of simulated performance and a first engineering feedback. • Engineering difficulties • Occupancy problems: More Pixel? Simulate • Possibly low cost BB <200€/ Module, cheap planar sensor n-in-p technology C. Darbo - INFN / Genova ATLAS Genova, 21 February 2008 5
Pixel Upgrade Highlights (2) Planar Sensor Proposal. • Several groups in ATLAS are interested in making a proposal on n-on-p (and n-on-n) pixel sensor R&D. • Proposal underway, Claus collecting interests; • Preliminary List of Interested Groups: • • • France: LAL Orsay; Germany: HU Berlin / DESY-Zeuthen, TU Dortmund, MPI fuer Physik, Munich MPI HLL, Munich; Spain: Barcelona, IFAE UK: University of Liverpool; USA: UNM, Albuquerque UCSC, Santa Cruz. 3 D Sensors. • IRST had problems with outsourced DRIE process. They have bought a DRIE machine and this should speed up process. • Genova has fabricated masks for BB at Alenia. We should involved in testing activities later in the year. Test Beam. • Telescope - interest from some groups to make a pixel telescope or updating the Bonn microstrip one. No much done till now. Important a roadmap for the next years. Can we contribute? C. Darbo - INFN / Genova ATLAS Genova, 21 February 2008 6
Pixel Upgrade Highlights (3) Electronics & FE Chip. • Submission of “Collaboration chip” thru Mosis foreseen for 28/1/2008 suspended and decided to submit the 24/3/2008 thru CERN/Mosis. Also CPPM will join to Bonn, Genova, Nikhef, LBNL. • Planned a review (~1 week) 17/3/2008. Also start a more formal proposal for FE-I 4 where: System view including R/O (till to ROD), DCS, Powering and Layout/Floorplanning. • Test of the chips, irradiation, lab-test strategy for future developments of test systems: TPLL/TPPC update/new design. New joining groups could take some role. Collaboration Chip 12 mm 2 • Reuse and inventory of existing TPLL/TPCC. Make new ones? This is important for all sensor activities. Discussion started. • Test and irradiation. Can Genova contribute? C. Darbo - INFN / Genova ATLAS Genova, 21 February 2008 7
0. 13 µm Chip - Genova part Part of the MCC has been converted (Roberto) to 0. 13 µm (older technology was 0. 25 µm). Used CERN Design flow (course followed last year). C. Darbo - INFN / Genova ATLAS Genova, 21 February 2008 8
Dates… Agenda 2008 Pixel General Upgrade meeting will be held the Friday before Pixel/ID weeks (PIB decision 10/2008). The Thursday before may be used for parallel meetings and Saturday morning in as extension. For 2008: • 1/2/2008 - Before Pix/ID - decided • 27/6/2008 - Before Pix/ID - decided • 21/11/2008 - Before Pixe. ID - decided There are possibly too large gaps between meetings. We could allocate a mixed SCT/Pixel Upgrade on Wednesday of ATLAS Week. • 9/4/2008 - in the ATLAS Week - decided USG (Upgrade Steering Group) proposes to have a parallel (with 2 hour plenary) • Xx/xx/2008 - in the Fall - to decide Next Tracker Upgrade is in discussion. Possibly end of September (23 -26/9/2008 or 30/9) or December (less preferred) in Nikhef. TWEPP will be held in Santorini 15 -19/9/2008. Pixel 2008 - end of September in USA A common ATLAS/CMS workshop is planned in the Fall, date still in discussion. C. Darbo - INFN / Genova ATLAS Genova, 21 February 2008 9
MCC-I 2. 1 & FE-I 3 Production: Costs Today FE-I 3 cost for 24 wafer ($ 45, 509, 6 Metal, opt. OP) and MCC ($ 44, 189, 5 met. , opt. MINCAP & OP). Genova will have to follow MCC test at Delta. C. Darbo - INFN / Genova ATLAS Genova, 21 February 2008 10
FP 7 - Work Package 3 INFN will participate into funding request to EU for the FP 7 • 11 Workpackages and ~10 M€ request • Genova will participate to WP 3 (1. 2 M€ - 2009÷ 2012). The 3 tasks in the WP 3: • Task 1 - Microelectronics technologies and enabling tools. The main objective of this task is to provide the infrastructure to make specific modern deep-submicron microelectronics technologies. INFN will concentrate on the followings 4 sub-tasks : 1. Evaluation, qualification and characterization of 0. 13 µm CMOS technology as mainstream and pioneering advanced technology as 0. 090 o 0. 065 µm (to be selected later in the project). 2. Organize a common computing infrastructure to house, maintain and verify large designs implemented as collaborative efforts. • Task 2 – Shareable IP blocks for HEP. Design, functional and performance qualification of a balanced set of blocks using the technologies of Task 3. 1. • Task 3 – Auxiliary Technologies / 3 D interconnect This network activity will work towards demonstrating the feasibility of 3 D interconnection for applications in Particle Physics. INFN will participate into the demonstrator. C. Darbo - INFN / Genova ATLAS Genova, 21 February 2008 11
