NUTRITION AWARENESS TRAINING WFP CXB 28 August 2019
BASIC NUTRITION CONCEPTS
Nutrients definition Nutrient: -A food component that living organisms need in order to survive Nutrients classified into macronutrients and micronutrients + water Macronutrients= carbohydrate, protein and fat. Bulk portion. Provide energy Micronutrients=vitamins+ Minerals. Intrinsic quantities. Support vital processes
Year Month
Macronutrients ü Energy is needed for the essential body functions ü Macronutrients provide different amounts of energy, expressed as kilocalories (Kcals). ü Fat provides approximately twice as much energy (9 kcals/g) as the same weight of protein or carbohydrate (4 kcal/g). ü 2100 kilocalories estimated ü Different % contribution of fat, protein to carbohydrates ü 9 -12% protein, fat 17 -20% and rest carbs

MICRONUTRIENTS
Micronutrients ü Tiny amounts required, however critical for vital body processes and functions-VITAMINS +MINERALLS ü Water soluble(not stored in the body) and fat soluble ü An individual’s requirement for different micronutrients depends on age and sex. There also key periods when micronutrient requirements increase: pregnancy and lactation, early infant and child growth, and during certain illnesses ü Major micronutrient (vitamin A, B, C, D, E, Iron, Iodine) ü Food fortification, supplementation and dietary diversification
FOOD GROUPS
Food Groups v Key food groups: cereal grains, legumes (pulses), oilseeds, tubers and roots, vegetables and fruits, animal products oils and fats. v Breast milk is an essential food for small children. v A combination of these food groups is required for a healthy diet. v Food aid baskets strive to ensure a proper combination of commodities. v Ready to-eat- meals are sometimes used in emergency situations. v Also specialised Blended foods
HEALTHY PLATE MODEL
Defining Malnutrition ( key terms) What do understand by malnutrition? What do understand by nutritional status?
Defining Malnutrition cont’d Malnutrition: q. Is a condition that develops when the body does not get the right amount of the nutrients it needs to maintain healthy tissues and organ function q. Is a broad term which refers to both overnutrition and under-nutrition Over nutrition: q. Is a condition arising from over consumption of certain foods/nutrients than the body requires over a period of time
Defining malnutrition cont’d Under-nutrition: Is a consequence of a deficiency in nutrient intake and/or absorption in the body. The different forms of under-nutrition that can appear isolated or in combination are chronic malnutrition, underweight, acute malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. These forms can be moderate or severe.
Defining malnutrition cont’d Nutritional status: Refers to a state of a person’s health in terms of nutrients in the body. It a measurement of the extent to which individual physiological needs for nutrients are met Terms relating to nutritional status include; Stunting or chronic malnutrition Underweight Acute Malnutrition or wasting Micronutrient deficiencies
Defining malnutrition cont’d Stunting or chronic malnutrition: is defined by a short stature It is a result of prolonged or repeated episodes of under-nutrition starting in early childhood Other contributors to stunting include Chronic or recurrent infections Intestinal parasite infestations Low birth weight resulting from maternal factors e. g. poor nutrition before and during pregnancy and lactation, short stature and infection
Categories of malnutrition
Conceptual Framework of Malnutrition
The intergenerational cycle of Malnutrition Child growth failure Low birth weight babies Early pregnancy Small adult women Low weight and height in teens ACC/SCN, 199224
Who is at greatest risk? üChildren under five years üPregnant women üLactating women üPeople infected with HIV/TB/ and similar complications üOlder people (≥ 60 years)
WHAT WFP IS DOING FOR NUTRITION IN CXB
What is WFP ding for Nutrition in CXB Both nutrition specific and sensitive v Food assistance v Treatment and prevention of malnutrition Mass campaigns on IYCF SBCC-change in lifestyle Enabling environments for dietary diversity. DRR/SMEP/Livelihoods v School meals
