WHAT ARE HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF HAVING POOR NUTRITION? � Overweight/obesity � Eating problems/issues disorders � Anorexia � Bulimia � Unhealthy efforts to control weight
HOW DOES OBESITY AFFECT A PERSON’S HEALTH? � Heart disease � High blood pressure � Diabetes � Obese – a person weighs more than 20% of their recommended body weight � Overweight – a person is heavy for their height and has excess stored fat
WHAT ARE EATING DISORDERS? � � � An eating disorder is a disease in which a person has an unhealthy concern for their body shape and weight. Anorexia nervosa – self starvation and an intense fear of gaining weight. Bulimia nervosa – binge eating followed by induced vomiting (some use laxatives or diuretics to rid their bodies of food and water) Bulimia can damage teeth, digestive system and the kidneys Both Anorexia & Bulimia can cause weak bones, low blood pressure, as well as heart problems Both can be fatal if not treated by a medical professional
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NUTRITION AND HEALTH? � Good nutrition leads to good health � Eating a balanced diet, drinking water, getting the correct amount of calories (energy) lowers cholesterol levels and prevents some diseases. � Good nutrition helps maintain healthy body weight as well as having more energy to do well in both school and physical activities.
