Nurses role in intubation n AIM. To explain and demonstrate the nurse’s role in intubation n OBJECTIVES. By the end of this session you should be able to. n State the reasons for intubation n assemble and check the equipment required. n Assist safely with intubation
Tracheal intubation; n Is the insertion of a breathing tube into the trachea through the vocal chords. This is normally performed under direct vision with the aid of a laryngoscope. The tube is usually passer through the mouth (oro-tracheal intubation) occasionally it is passed through the nose (naso-tracheal intubation). Morton 1997 p 52.
Reasons for intubation n For head and neck operations or remoteness from pt. Eg. ct scan n To prevent gastric content aspiration eg. low GCS n When the airway is difficult eg. maxfax, oedema n For ill pts or with complicated anaesthesia techniques. eg. high Fi 02, reduce Co 2 in H. I. n For resuscitation. (Carrie et al 1996)
Your Role n Check equipment n Hand to Dr – in a way to ensure quick, smooth procedure. n Monitor patient- dr is looking down a throat not at what is around him!!
