Aphid Soft-bodied insect typically referred to as plant lice. n Adults may be winged or wingless. n Aphids have a pear shaped body with long legs and antennae. n May transmit diseases. n Produce honey dew. n
Bagworm Carries its home with it as it moves and feeds. n Typically found on junipers, cedars, and white pines. n Bag is constructed from bits of foliage, pieces of bark, or other plant parts. n The larva spends its entire life inside this bag. n
Leafminer Larva inside of the leaf n leaves have blotches or blisters and turn yellow when infected. n The leaves may drop prematurely n
Scale Two types: armored and soft scale. n Soft scale produce honeydew. n These insects damage the plant by sucking sap usually until the plant is dead. n
Leaf Hoppers Occur on almost any type of plants and feed mainly on leaves. n Remove excessive amounts of sap and destroy chlorophyll. n Disrupt food transportation. n Kills terminal twigs due to oviposition. n Vector diseases/stunt plant growth. n
Locust Borer One of the most commonly encountered round head borers. n Adults are around 3/4” long. n Black with gold crossbars and a “W” across the wing covers. n Adults feed on pollen, while the larvae bore and feed in black locust. n
Whitefly Infested plants appear chlorotic and unhealthy. n Unless controlled this pest may destroy the commercial value of floriculture crops. n Adults are usually found on the underside of leaves, while the immature crawl around the plant. n
Two-Spotted Spider Mite Light yellow or green to dark green. n Typically has two spots on either side of the abdomen. n May inject chemicals in the plant that cause desiccation. n Eight legs=Arachnid (NOT AN INSECT!!) n
White Grub Easily identified due to the “U” body shape. n Feed in the soil on roots of grasses and other plants. n The larval stage of the Japanese Beetle or the Green June Beetle. n
Snail/Slug Soft bodied creatures n very coarse tongues that lick the plants foliage creating holes. n Typically found on newer growth n most damaging at night n
