Numicon at West Park
Early Learning Goal: Mathematics – Number Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
Your Homework Kit • Set Numicon 1 -10 pieces. • Set of extra 10 pieces. • Number cards. • Mixed counters. • Numicon dice set. • Numicon Number Line.
Numicon at school We match numbers, objects and Numicon! We use Numicon to order and sort numbers! We use Numicon pegs to make and explore repeating pattern and symmetry! We make ourselves in Numicon numbers!
Numicon at school We use Numicon pegs to find out how heavy objects are! We use Giant Numicon to make calculations. Let me introduce you to Mr 9! We use Numicon to help solve computer challenges! We use Numicon to count in multiples and solve ‘big number’ problems! ‘What’s double 25 + 25? ’
Numicon for Home Numicon will link into the school’s homework policy, with activities set every week, to allow children to use and apply their mathematical skills. These activities should only be up to 5 minutes a day, and will be specific to the skills your child is working on. The easiest thing you might have is… The hardest thing you might have is…
Let’s talk addition! Then we place them together to count. First we find the pieces we need… 5 and the 3! Next we try to make the Numicon shapes we know to help us solve the problem quickly! 5 + 3 = 8 Lastly, we prove it by placing the number of our answer over the remaining Numicon holes! If it fits, we are correct.
Let’s talk subtraction! First we find the pieces we need… 14 and the 7! Then lay the number to be subtracted on top… Next we count what’s left. . 1, 2, 3 etc. 14 – 7 = Last of all we prove it by placing the number of our answer over the remaining Numicon holes! If it fits, we are correct. 7
? ? ? ? How will I know which mathematical skills my child knows? We write the maths skills we are learning on the boards outside our unit, and in the courtyard, every week. Talk about what we learnt, how we solved any problems and the resources we used… They love sharing their success with you!
? ? How can I help my child? ? ? • Little and often – practising Numicon skills, or completing home challenges, works best if done in smaller sessions more regularly. • Find different ways to make numbers and explore any number range your child is interested in. If they love counting in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s, or have a growing interest in ‘Big’ numbers, explore these together! • Remember to reinforce all mathematical skills when working through problems, such as recalling Number Bonds to help with addition. • Allow time to work through problems - using trial and error to clarify their own thinking really helps!
? ? What’s the next step? ? ? Our maths activities are planned to ensure children have the opportunity to use and apply their skills in a range of contexts using Numicon and other mathematical equipment. Use every opportunity to spot, read, write and make maths come alive – counting stairs, cutlery, cars. Every little helps, so keep up the good work at home! Any questions?
