Number Talks • A number talk is a tool for helping students develop computational fluency because the expectations is that they will use number relationships and structures f numbers to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
What are Numbers Talk? • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving • Reasons abstractly • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasonings • Model mathematics • Use appropriate strategically • Attend to precision • Looks for and make use of structure • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
Components of Number Talks • Teacher roles • Classroom environment • Classroom community • Classroom discussions • Role of mental math • Purposeful computations • Teaching children evidence statement
How to prepare your classroom for Number Talks • Set the foundation/establish routines • Designate an area in your classroom for number talks • Develop hand signals and signs • Explain the importance of classroom disscusion • Keep number talks approx 10 -15 mins without being included in the math lessson
Modeling • Watch video of number talks 2 to 3 times and ask audience to identify a component of number talks each time. • Model a number talk and identify : wait time, hand signals, strategies, scribing, questioning and discuss the mini lesson.
Finishing up • Have audience /model number talks with grade level. • Post three to four problems and have them work on the problems in small groups. • Answer any questions.
