Number Patterns Grade 6 Patterning Unit

Recap

What is a pattern? Where have you seen patterns?

Pattern Defined A pattern follows a rule or rules

Recursive Patterns - Many number patterns you have examined are recursive patterns - This mean each term can be found by applying the pattern rule to the previous term What is an example of a recursive pattern?

Example #1 I am going to write the first 5 terms for a recursive pattern that starts at 7. Pattern Rule: Start at 7, Multiply by 2, then add 1 7 x 2+1=15, 15 x 2+1=31, 31 x 2+1=63, 63 x 2+1=127 7, 15, 31, 63, 127

Example #2 Here is a recursive pattern: 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, . . . -Find the pattern rule To find the pattern rule, you need to find the difference between the number on the different and the number on the left. -Write the next 3 terms in the pattern

Example #2 What is the rule: Start at 1, add 5 What are the next 3 terms: 26, 31, 36

Task In groups, identify each pattern rule and write the next 3 terms. Then, write the steps you took to solve each problem. Group 1: 2, 4, 10, 28, 82, . . . 250, 230, 210, 190, 170, . . . Group 2: 3, 4, 6, 10, 18, . . . 2, 5, 11, 23, 47, . . . Group 3: 5, 12, 26, 110, 222, . . . 300, 281, 262, 243, 224, . . . Group 4: 3, 6, _, 24, 48, _, _ 5, 27, 137, 687, … Group 5: 3, 12, 39, 120… 100, 82, 64, 46, . . .
