Why Nuclear Safety Because of the special characteristics and unique hazards of nuclear technology: 1 Radioactive by-products, 2 Concentration of energy in the core, 3 Decay heat. As nuclear professionals at Africa’s only Nuclear Power Station, we understand the role we play as it relates to these special characteristics of nuclear. We are the ambassadors for Nuclear 2020 -11 -05 3

Individual commitment to safety The nuts and bolts of every NSC Program is the cascading Human Performance program. One of the ways we give effect to the Individual Commitment to Safety category is via the HP tools that when applied mindfully and rigorously allows us to have positive control over the activities we perform. At Eskom, we, the Nuclear Professionals apply the essential knowledge, skills, behaviours and practices like the HP tools, needed to conduct our work safely and reliably. 2020 -11 -05 7

Management commitment to safety Our leaders recognize that safety culture is not all or nothing but is, rather, constantly moving along a continuum. One of the ways that we give effect to Management commitment to safety is via the Leadership Development Programme. 2020 -11 -05 9
Management Commitment to safety • Leaders are developed on all levels. The following programmes are offered: • Supervisory Development Programme (SDP) • Middle Management Programme (MMP) • Senior Management Programme (Senior Team Journey) • Business Driven Action Learning (BDAL) which aims at solving specific business challenges whilst experiencing team dynamics. • Customised leadership programmes based on specific customer requirements. 2020 -11 -05 10

Management systems • The Corrective Action Program (CAP) is one example of a management system that gives expression to Nuclear Safety Culture. • CAP creates operating experience (OE), either from our own events, or from events from other utilities. By reviewing and assessing individual events, we extract lessons learnt and apply them, thereby creating a mechanism for Continuous Learning. • CAP is also the mechanism for all workers to raise Condition Reports (CR’s). It is a communication tool to inform the organisation of something that is not according to standard, or has the potential to cause adverse consequences for the plant, our people or the processes. When we know about something, we can do something about it. • CAP requires each Nuclear Professional to understand the concept of Nuclear Safety, and how each and every one of us has a role to play. 2020 -11 -05 12
