Nuclear Power Hello I am a nuclear fuel

Nuclear Power

Hello!!! I am a nuclear fuel pellet I am very small, but I have a lot of power!! I have as much power as a ton of coal (i. e. size of a house) and I am the size of your pencil eraser!!! Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

ELECTRICITY We all use electricity everyday! What do you use electricity for? Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

But… Do you know where electricity comes from? Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

How does POWER get to your Wii?

Power Plants Who knows what kind of power plants there are? Are there any power plants around here?

Nuclear Energy

Electric Power in the US In the United States, most of our energy comes from nonrenewable http: //www. eia. doe. gov/kids/energyfacts/science/formsofenergy. html Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

Fuel pellets like me make power in nuclear power plants. Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

What is Nuclear Fission? If an atom (such as Uranium) is hit by a neutron, it can become unstable and split. This is called NUCLEAR FISSION. Before

The atom splits in two and releases neutrons and energy After

Fission is similar to pool…

Typical Nuclear Reactor

The steam turns a generator just like wind turns a pinwheel…

How Nuclear Energy Helps… If the electricity YOU use in ONE YEAR was produced with nuclear power ONLY, the total amount of waste produced would weigh the same as one golf ball Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

How Nuclear Energy Helps… Reduces fossil fuel use Reduces Air Pollution Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

Do you know any other uses of nuclear science? Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

Nuclear Science is used every day in a lot of industries and fields. Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

What items in your home might be radioactive? Smoke detectors Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

What other items might you find in your house? ? • • • Computer Television Porcelain teeth The old Fiesta ware Cigarettes

How about people? ? Do you emit radiation? ? • You receive 2 millirem if you sleep next to someone for 8 Hours

Nuclear Medicine • Detect diseases and broken bones: – X- ray – Radioactive dyes/Tracer • Treats or cures cancer by shrinking tumors

Other Uses in Medicine • Makes hip & knee implants stronger • Batteries for pacemakers • Sterilizes medical equipment Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

Nuclear Science can improve the food you eat Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español

Food Irradiation • Eliminate harmful germs from food – E. Coli – Salmonella • Make food last longer • Limit the use of artificial food preservatives uw-food-irradiation. engr. wisc. edu

Agriculture • Use less chemical fertilizers – The crops absorb water and nutrients more efficiently. • Use less pesticides – Insects cannot breed. www. iaea. org/programmes/nafa/dx/

Space Exploration • Powers spaceships and space stations as well as their instrumentation. • Makes sure that Astronauts’ food is safe.

Geology & Archaeology How old are those dinosaur bones?

Nuclear Science and Technology is so cool!!! • Makes electricity without polluting the air • Improves our health • Makes our lives better by making our homes and food safer • Allows us to learn more about our history and our future Drawings by Isabel Arechabala & Foro Nuclear Español
