NSDI Governance Update FGDC Steering Committee Meeting 17 April 2006
Background • FGDC established “Future Directions” governance team in 2004 to develop options/recommendations for enhanced NSDI governance process. • Team developed report, incorporating input from Federal, State and local governments, as well as private and nonprofit partners. • Team submitted report to FGDC in May 2005.
Governance Report • Governance Report included three primary recommendations: 1. Enhance the role and functions of the FGDC 2. Establish a National Geospatial Coordination Council 3. Improve management of Federal Geospatial Programs • Steering Committee approved Recommendations 1 and 3 at June 2005 meeting. Requested additional analysis/options to address Recommendation 2
FGDC Governance/Management Actions • Initiated quarterly FGDC Steering Committee meetings • Implementing internal management recommendations from governance report • Developed new charters for Steering Committee and Coordination Group (Charters are in final review for signature) • Working with NSGIC to implement “Fifty States Initiative” Statewide Coordination Councils • Strengthened and formalized the roles of NSDI liaisons • Revised the FGDC annual reporting process to focus on results
OMB Governance/Management Actions • OMB Memorandum – Designation of Senior Agency Officials for Geospatial Information (March 2006) • Launch of Geospatial Line of Business Initiative (March 2006)

Next Steps • Lo. B Request for Information (RFI) issued April 6, responses due May 5 • RFI requests feedback from stakeholders on governance strategies to implement Lo. B common solution(s) • FGDC/Lo. B Task Force will analyze & summarize RFI feedback on governance • Explore possible revisions to EO 12906
