Water and Land • -The province is almost surrounded by water -Much of the province is part of the Appalachian/Maritime Region -Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are connected by a small land bridge (28 km Isthmus of Chignecto) .

Resources/Industry -Both hardwood and softwood forests cover much of the province -Refineries turn oil into gasoline and other products • -The main mineral is coal which is used for making electricity.

People and Places • -Fishing villages and lighthouses along the coastline attract tourists. -Marconi sent the first official west-to-east wireless ( radio) message across the Atlantic Ocean from Table Head, Cape Breton Island in 1902.

Birds of Prey • Nova Scotia is home to variety of wildlife. The province’s official bird is the Osprey. The Osprey is a bird of prey. It flies over lakes, rivers, and bays hunting for fish. When the Osprey sees a fish, it dives feet first into the water. The Osprey rises from the water carrying the fish in its talons, or claws. Ospreys make large nests in treetops. The autumn, ospreys migrate to the Central America, South America, and the southern United States.

Symbolic Mace/Staff • Nova Scotia has an official mace. A mace is an ornamental stick that is carried as a symbol of authority. It represents the power of the speaker when the government is in session. The government can only conduct business when the mace is present. The mace is always in the care of the sergeant at arms. Nova Scotia’s mace celebrates the province’s Scottish heritage. It has many interesting features.
