What is a noun?
Noun (n. ): A part of speech that is used to name a person, place, thing, quality, or idea. A noun can be used as the subject or object of a verb
Concrete vs. Abstract Noun Concrete Noun: A noun that can be identified with the 5 senses (hear, smell, touch, taste, and see) Abstract Noun: A noun that is a thought or idea (idea nouns)
People nouns name titles of people, ethnicity of people, and names of people. Titles of people: Doctor, teacher, leader, veterinarian, president, secretary, etc. Ethnicity: Chamorro, Chukeese, Palauan, Filipino, American, etc. Names: Mr. Cortez, Jack, Sarah, Obama, Nelson, etc.
Places Place nouns name real places and general places Real places: Guam, Micronesia Mall, FBLG Middle School, Two Lovers’ Point, Tumon, etc. General Places: Classroom, school, market, court, cave, city, house, etc.
Things Thing nouns name manmade/inanimate objects or other living organisms Manmade/inanimate objects: Chalk, motorcycle, house, tools, pencil, airplane, etc. Other living organisms: Frog, chicken, tree, flower, fish, ants, cockroach, etc.
Ideas (abstract nouns) Idea nouns name emotions, values, subjects, days of the week and months of the year. Emotions/Values: Happiness, sadness, etc. Courageous, cowardice, willingness, honesty, strength, etc. Dates: Monday, December, etc. Subjects: Math, science, geography, algebra, English, etc.
Collective Nouns A collective noun names a group of people or things Examples: Club troop pack herd orchestra army class team group
Compound Nouns Compound Noun: A noun made up of two or more words. Examples: Separate Words Hyphenated Words Combined Words • post office • middle school • Golden Gate Bridge • bull’s-eye • daughter-in-law • left-hander • flagship • railroad • doorknob
