ANIMATE AND INANIMATE NOUNS Look at the sentence: THE BOOK IS LOOKING AT THE READER What’s strange about the sentence? What’s strange is that we don’t expect a book, which is not alive, to be able to see something. Nouns that refer to things that are alive are called animte, while nouns that refer to things that are not alive ara called inanimate. A book is an inanimate noun.

HUMAN AND NONHUMAN NOUN Look at the following sentence: THE CAT HAS WRITEN MANY SCIENCE BOOKS There is something strange here. We know that ‘cat’ is animate since it is alive. However, only a special type of animate noun has the ability to write: a human noun. The following sentence is fine: My teacher has written many science books. ‘teacher’ is human animate noun and ‘cat’ is nonhuman animate noun.

COUNT AND NONCOUNT NOUNS There are some nouns that can be counted, and so we can use ‘a’ or ‘an’ with them and can also make them plural. These nouns are called count nouns. There are other nouns that typically are not counted, and so we do not use ‘a’ or ‘an’ with them and do not typically make them plural. These nouns are called noucount nouns. (Another name of noucount noun is a mass noun. )
