NOUN AND ADJECTIVE AGREEMENT OBJECTIVE: TLW: examine and differentiate between the various forms of adjectives in Spanish. TLW also learn what gender and number of nouns is. The goal of this lesson is to determine how to correctly make nouns and adjectives agree in gender and number. WHAT IS NOUN AND ADJECTIVE AGREEMENT? 1. In Spanish, all nouns have gender; this is how we classify nouns. 2. In Spanish, all nouns and adjectives MUST agree in Gender and Number. 3. There are 2 groups of nouns in Spanish; Feminine nouns and Masculine Nouns. 4. El/Los/Un/Unos=Masculine Nouns 5. La/Las/Unas=Feminine Nouns 6. Is=es. Are=son. An L. Ford Production © 2018
SENTENCE ORDER HOW TO ARRANGE THE SENTENCES: 1. If you have a COMPLETE SENTENCE (a subject and a verb), you keep the original order of the sentence; Do NOT change the order. EJEMPLO: The fur coat is red and black. -El abrigo de pieles es rojo y negro. SIN EMBARGO, -HOWEVER, - 2. If you have a FRAGMENT (an incomplete sentence, it has a subject, but no verb), you will change it; you will move the NOUN in front of the ADJECTIVE. EJEMPLO: The red and black fur coat. -El abrigo de pieles rojo y negro.
APUNTES- Noun and Adjective Agreement 1. Noun- person, place, thing 2. Adjective- A word that describes (modifies) a noun 3. Agreement- To agree means to “match”. In Spanish, all nouns and adjectives must agree in gender and number 4. Gender- A classification (grouping) of nouns. All nouns are either masculine or feminine 5. Number- Tells if a noun is singular or plural
Definite Articles- There are 4 definite articles in Spanish (el, la, los, las). They ALL mean “the”. Definite articles tell you the gender and the number of the noun. How do you know which one to use? These have to agree (match) the modified noun in gender and number. el- (masculine/singular word for “the”) la- (feminine/singular word for “the”) los- (masculine/plural word for “the”) las- (feminine/plural word for “the”)
Indefinite Articles- There are 4 indefinite articles in Spanish (un, una, unos, unas). Un and una both mean “a/an. ” Unos and unas both mean “some. ” They also tell you the gender and number of a noun. How do you know which one to use? How to pluralize nouns • If a noun ends in a vowel, add -s. • If a noun ends in a consonant, add -es. • If a noun ends in a -z, change the z to c, then add –es. • If a noun ends in ión, drop the accent mark, then add -es.
