Notes les 5 -6 février Les verbes réfléchis (Reflexive Verbs) À quelle heure est-ce que tu te couches? What time do you go to bed? -Je me couche vers dix heures et demie. -I go to bed around ten-thirty. Est-ce que vous habillez avant ou après le petit-déjeuner? Do you guys get dressed before or after breakfast? -Nous nous habillons avant le petit-déjeuner. -We get dressed before breakfast.
A reflexive verb usually describes what a person does to or for herself or himself. The action “reflects” back on the subject. Marie se regarde dans le miroir. Marie looks at herself in the mirror.
Reflexive verbs are always accompanied by a reflexive pronoun: me, te, se, nous, vous SE LAVER (to wash oneself) je me lave (I wash myself) tu te laves (you wash yourself) il/elle/on se lave (he/she/one washes himself/herself/oneself) nous lavons (we wash ourselves) vous lavez (you wash yourselves) ils/elles se lavent (they wash themselves)
The subject and the reflexive pronouns must agree. subject je tu il/elle/on nous vous ils/elles → → → reflexive pronoun me te se nous vous se
The reflexive pronouns me, te and se contract with verbs that begin with a vowel or silent h. Est-ce que tu t’endors vite quand tu te couches? Do you fall asleep quickly when you go to bed? -Oui, je m’endors dans cinq minutes. -Yes, I fall asleep within five minutes. Est-ce que les enfants s’habillent? Are the kids getting dressed?
Se lever and se sécher have spelling changes similar to acheter. se lever je me lève tu te lèves il/elle/on se lève nous levons vous levez ils/elles se lèvent se sécher je me sèche tu te sèches il/elle/on se sèche nous séchons vous séchez ils/elles se sèchent
When using reflexive verbs with body parts, use the definite article (le, la, l’, les). Je me lave le visage avant de me coucher. I wash my face before going to bed. Nous nous brossons les dents tous les jours. We brush our teeth every day.
When using infinitives, place the reflexive pronoun before the infinitive. Je ne veux pas me coucher maintenant. I don’t want to go to bed now. Est-ce que tu vas te lever? Are you going to get up?
When giving affirmative commands using reflexive verbs, the reflexive pronouns are attached to the end of the verb with a hyphen. Te becomes toi in affirmative commands. Réveille-toi, Pierre! Wake up, Pierre! Lavez-vous les mains avant le dîner. Wash your hands before dinner. Levons-nous! Let’s get up! Place pronouns before the verb in negative commands. Ne t’endors pas! Don’t fall asleep! Ne vous levez pas. Don’t get up.
