Notes 8/28
Let’s start at the beginning… Why do scientists experiment? Because we have a natural need to understand how things work and why. Let’s learn about what it takes to get an idea about how the world works to a scientific law. © 2015 Getting Nerdy, LLC IF I Do this… THEN this will happen…
I Hypothesize… When we experiment, we start by making observations and inferences. We then develop a scientific explanation or hypothesis that will predict the outcome of our experiment. A hypothesis can be supported or refuted through repeated experimentation. © 2015 Getting Nerdy, LLC IF I Do this… THEN this will happen…
We Have a Theory… After testing a hypothesis many, MANY times, we may start to see patterns in our data and our results. If those patterns are consistent, or follow the same rules, and they have been supported and accepted, then the hypothesis can be considered a theory. A theory, however, can be disproven or change over time. © 2015 Getting Nerdy, LLC
Laws Can’t Be Broken… A theory can become a law when the patterns remain consistent despite endless testing. A law holds true under the specified conditions without exception. Scientific laws are short and to the point, ALWAYS true, and can never be shown to be wrong. © 2015 Getting Nerdy, LLC
