Moving West • Now that Americans had won their independence from England, they began to seek more land to farm and more riches like animal fur. • However, Spain controlled everything west of the Mississippi River, but they were nice enough to let American’s sail their goods on the river to different ports, like New Orleans.

French Interference • In 1792, The French Revolution broke out. The French king, Louise XVI, an ally of America, was killed. • In 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte took over France and built its military up for world wide dominance. • Spain gave the rich Louisiana Territory to France in 1802. This change in power threatened the American economy, because now no one would allow them to use the Mississippi River to travel. The French wanted the territory all to themselves.

The Louisiana Purchase 1803: President Jefferson sends ambassadors to France to try and buy the town of New Orleans, at the mouth of the Mississippi River. With no need for the Louisiana territory, and with the Napoleonic Wars getting more expensive, the French wanted to sell all of the Louisiana Territory.
