Discovery Ed: Solubility 5: 01 What is the difference between a solute and a solvent? Provide two examples of each. Add to warm up: Magnesium and Calcium are two examples of solutes that dissolve in our water. Hardness of water: Hard water has a lot of minerals dissolved in it. The more magnesium and calcium dissolved in water the “harder” the water is considered to be. Why do you think “hard” water is bad?
Does precipitation remain freshwater forever? No, some of our precipitation falls directly into the ocean and is absorbed by the ocean itself & turns salty How does fresh water become salt water in the ocean? Water is the UNIVERSAL SOLVENT…. it has the ability to dissolve all sorts of minerals like salt. Our lithosphere contains lots of minerals like salt (Na. Cl). As water runoff makes its way towards the ocean, the water dissolves the salt and carries it to the ocean.
Where does water go after it precipitates?
A lot of it seeps into the ground through permeable rock,
…into aquifers we can access through wells & springs.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF OUR PRECIPITATION THAT HITS LAND & DOESN’T GO UNDERGROUND?
Draw an outline of your hand in your notebook.
Large areas of land LAND Your entire hand is known as a “drainage basin or river basin” (BASIN) Drainage Basins otherwise known as River Basins are all of the land in which water flows on top of.
Bailey Middle is located right near a divide.
Label all your fingers watersheds Small pieces of land under the water • Water sheds are the paths water takes on top of a basin. LAND • Examples include rivers, streams, creeks, channels, and other tributaries. • Can you name a watershed in the Catawba River Basin?
But what about the rest of our rain that hits land & doesn’t go underground? RUN-OFF!
RUN-OFF HAPPENS OVER LARGE AREAS OF LAND CALLED DRAINAGE OR RIVER BASINS.

Drainage/river basins allow water to flow down from highlands called DIVIDES.
Divides separate drainage basins. Water sheds Divide Drainage Basins Water sheds Drainage Basins Divide

North Carolina has 17 river basins. 17 different paths that run-off DRAINS back into the ocean.
And each river basin is made of smaller WATERSHEDS.
And each river basin is made of smaller WATERSHEDS. little streams, creeks, tributaries that run into a big river

How many smaller watersheds are in this river/drainage basin?
How many smaller watersheds are in this river/drainage basin? At least 9, maybe more?
How about us? Whoa, that’s a lot of watersheds.
NORTH CAROLINA RIVER BASIN POSTER PROJECT… Water Cycle Promethean
Provide one example for each You may draw another river basin and water shed (Major Water Sheds) (Provide one interesting fact for each)
5 mini literacy lessons Chronological Time / Order 1. Close read as a group. 2. Choose four of the five activities 3. Annotate the article.
What is a watershed? Which of the following best describes a watershed? a) A high point of elevated land located between two drainage basins b) The area of land that drains to a particular point along a stream c) All the land that collects water from precipitation and drains into a particular area.
