Why CCSS? • Standards, in general, ensure consistent expectations • Provides educators with guidance on what content/skills to teach • The standards were created with collegeand career readiness in mind 12
School Curricula w/ CCSS Implementation • Schools tend to deviate from language and culture revitalization / preservation efforts in order to avoid inadequate preparation for CCSS Assessments. • Our PBL framework is an attempt to begin correcting this problem. 13

PBL: Challenging Problem or Question • After viewing several images and reading a typical children’s article on Thanksgiving, students will share their personal understanding of Thanksgiving and any questions they have about the history of the holiday. • Posed question: What does Thanksgiving mean to Native Americans and how does this differ than the popularly accepted story? 15

Authenticity & Student Voice/Choice • • • Students should first craft their own narrative of Thanksgiving Students reflect (journal) on each reading and the significance to themselves, classmates, and society Students choose the format through which they share their new or revised understanding of Thanksgiving history 17
Reflection acc • Students reflect and journal about their own changes in perception of Thanksgiving history • Students reflect and share their thoughts about how Thanksgiving is represented in mainstream media and how it marginalized Native American history • Metacognition: Students think about their own thinking through this PBL process 18
