How to Play: Normal Bingo • Either the teacher reads out the words and the children cover them or the pile is placed in the middle and each child takes a turn to read the words. • Each round can have a different goal • ie. The first person to cover the middle row, or column. This is a nice way to bring in rows and columns. • Cover up the first column (can see if it is automatic for them to start on the left of the page. ) • Cover up the whole board. • During the game, ask how many they have left to cover. Who has the most or the least left (this is bringing in Maths vocab. ) developing counting skills, informally working out number problems etc. • Don’t forget to shout Bingo when you are finished! Some fun add ons: • When you get to your last word, you have to put it into a sentence (verbally) • Using the word cards, you could hand out 2 to each child and ask them to put them into alphabetical order. The number of cards can increase when they are more familiar with alphabetical order. • Sort cards by starting with the shortest word to the longest. Will have to count letters. (working on numeracy skills) • Categorizing • Cards can be sorted into all the words that have the same first letter. This will enhance their categorizing skills. They can be put in pairs and get about 6 words and see if they can group them. The groups can be anything from the words having one similar letter to the same last letter to the same number of letters in the word. They could also have the same sound in the word. (Makes them look a little deeper into the word. ) www. createplay. co. za
