Why is this important? • We know that 1 in 14 children in the UK has been physically abused. • 23% of adults with a learning disability have been abused • 1 in 4 rape victims are under 16 years of age • 908 adults in Northumberland last year needed to support from the safeguarding adults team. • 1 or 2 children die each week at the hands of another person

On your hire agreement …… • Does the activity that you are planning to carry out involve working with children or adults at risk? • Are your staff / volunteers eligible for a DBS check and if so at what level? Or are your staff and volunteer eligible for a DBS check and have they gone through the checking process? • Do you have policies and procedures which you follow to ensure that children and adults at risk remain safe?

Ultimately it is the trustees of each village hall who are responsible for identifying the role of each volunteer / worker, implementing safe recruitment processes, carrying out an assessment of risk and determining eligibility for DBS checks.
