Organization: What is the IB mission? The IB is a not-for-profit foundation, motivated by its educational mission, focused on the student. The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. “The world in which you were born is just one model of reality. Contents: What does the Diploma Programme curriculum contain? The curriculum contains six subject groups and a core of three parts. Students study concurrently: § three subjects at higher level (240 hours each). § three subjects at standard level (150 hours each). § all three parts of the core. Core Components of the IBDP The Diploma Program has three other unique features: 1 Theory of Knowledge • Is an interdisciplinary course designed to stimulate critical thinking and reflection • It challenges students to question the bases of knowledge, be aware of bias, and learn to analyze the evidence used in presenting an argument. • Students come to understand different points of view and how one's background can affect one's perception of truth. 2 Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) • Encourages students to involve themselves beyond the curriculum in the arts, athletics and service to others. • Working with the 8 Learning Outcomes of CAS students set goals and then reflect on those goals in a variety of ways. 3 The Extended Essay • 4, 000 -word essay that all IB Diploma Program students write on a topic of special interest drawn from their studies. • Excellent preparation for research and writing skills required at university. Assessment in IB Assessment in the Diploma Program • criterion-based assessment of performance. • learning is measured in relation to established, published standards that apply equally to each student at every IB World School. The IB Organization's assessment strategy • Emphasizes validity, reliability and fairness. • Teachers and IB examiners work as partners to ensure that students have various opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned. • A student's progress is assessed by her teachers through classroom and group work, assignments, labs, and reviewed by highly qualified IB teachers. • Examinations are held in Grade 11 and 12 and are graded externally by IB examiners. • Grades are awarded on a scale of one to seven, with seven being the highest. In addition to their exam grades • Students may receive up to three Diploma (bonus) points for combined performance in the Theory of Knowledge course and the Extended Essay. • An International Baccalaureate Diploma is awarded to students who graduate with at least 24 points, up to a maximum of 45 points. • • Page 11 Pre Diploma Program in Grade 10 How do we prepare our students? Students go beyond the outcomes of grade 10 academic courses in breadth and depth, material is covered at a faster pace and students are given some IB like assessments (research paper, labs, oral presentations etc. ) to prepare them for the challenges of the IB programme. Programme Fees (all covered by the Nova Scotia Department of Education) • IB Schools pay yearly fees to the IBO to be able to deliver their curriculum and give students the opportunity to earn an IB Diploma. • Registration and examination fees for each student. • Courier Fees- All examinations and internal assessments are sent to examiners around the world for marking and moderation • Teacher Training – all IB teachers must be trained in an intensive 4 day workshop, locations all over North America. • Activities – we try, where possible to subsidize co and extracurricular events organized by the IB team of teachers Page 14 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007

More specifically, time management skills, critical thinking and writing skills, and being a strong independent adult learner. Students will gain a sense of self and move forward with confidence. §Transfer Credit • Students can apply for University credit based on their results in IB examinations. Many universities allow students to gain up to 3 -4 university credits from scores of 5 or higher in IB. Dalhousie University In 2016 Dalhousie analyzed IB student performance. The data showed that IB students are more likely to excel/make the Dean’s list.
