About the Unit “What’s it worth to you” • This unit is about antiques, collections or possessions, which a person keeps for a long time. For example, jewelry, coins, stamps, toys, dolls, art, or furniture. • People usually keep those stuff for a reason. They can keep it because it may worth more money by time, or it may has a sentimental value to them.

Preparing to Read Background • Reading one discusses a program shown on the American TV. The program is called Antiques Roadshow. It is a popular show in which the guests are regular people. They bring their possessions or collections to the show and tell stories about them in order to know their value.

Reading one My Secret Introducing the topic • In this part you will read a column in the “Boston Daily News” newspaper, Sports section. It is written by “Dan Stone”, a sports writer, who has a secret which will be revealed through out the reading. The secret is that he watches “Antiques Roadshow” every Monday night, while he tells his friends that he watches “Monday Night Football” program instead.

Reading One My Secret Read this part of Dan Stone’s Column, then answer the questions that follow. My Secret 1 2 3 4 5 I am a sports writer and I love my job because I love sports, especially football and baseball. But I have a secret. Every Monday night I watch my favorite TV show. Sometimes the telephone rings, but I don’t answer it. I tell my friends that I am watching Monday Night Football, but that isn’t true. My favorite show is more exciting than Monday Night Football. It is also very educational. I learn a lot about art and U. S. history every week. Here is my secret: On Monday nights I watch Antiques Roadshow. It is about antiques and collections. It’s great! Veronica’s grandmother got the picture for free in 1925. the expert looked at Veronica’s picture carefully and said, ” this is very rare. Thomas Cole is the artist. Cole painted this around 1835. Your painting is worth around $125, 000. ” Veronica was very surprised. She told the expert, “Wow! That’s a lot of money! But I don’t really care about the money. I’m going to keep it because it has a lot of sentimental value. ” I want Antiques Roadshow to come to my city. I am ready. I have a baseball signed by Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson in the 1940 s. It ‘s in perfect condition. I also have a baseball card collection. I started the collection when I was a young boy. The autographed baseball and my baseball cards have a lot of sentimental value to me. Maybe they are worth a lot of money , too! And you? Are you ready? Look carefully around your home! You might have something very valuable. So, remember, don’t call me on Monday nights. I’m watching “football”.

Collect things that you are interested in. collect thing that you want to keep for a long time. TIP 2: Educate yourself. Become an expert. Read a lot. Talk to antiques expert. Ask a lot of questions. Don’t worry! Experts love to talk. TIP 3: Look for the best. Collect things in good condition. For example, an antique toy in “mint, ” or perfect, condition will be valuable in the future. A similar toy in a bad condition will not be as valuable. TIP 4: Buy rare items. Collect items that are rare. Rare things are more valuable than common things. Reviewing Language Exploring language Remember that A noun is : a person, thing or idea. An adjective is: a word that describes a noun. Sometimes we can tell if a word is a noun or an adjective just by looking at the last letters in the word. Some nouns can end in: -tion, -ment, and –or. The Simple Present Tense Continued Rules Ø Use the simple present tense for everyday actions “ habits”, or facts. - I have a secret. Sometimes the telephone rings, but I don’t answer it. Water boils at 100 degrees. Ø When the subject is he, she or it, put an s at the end of the regular verb. NOTE: Be and have are irregular. - She collects antique jewelry. - Antiques Roadshow is my favorite show. - She has a secret. Ø For negative statements, use: do/does + not+ the base form of the verb. In speaking and informal writing, use the contractions: don’t/ doesn’t. - Stone does not watch football on Mondays. - I don’t like to play golf.

Style The Paragraph • Read the paragraph and answer the questions which follow. 1 - What is the main idea of this paragraph? Circle the sentence that has the main idea. 2 - Does the writer begin each new sentence on a new line, or does the writer continue on the same line? 3 - When does the writer stop and move down to the next line?

The Paragraph Ø A paragraph is a group of sentences that develops one main idea. Ø The first sentence usually gives the main idea of the paragraph. Ø Indent the first line of your paragraph. If you use the computer, hit the “tab” button once or hit the “space” bar five times. Ø There are two margins on your paper. Write your paragraph between the two margins. Ø When you write a paragraph, do not start each new sentence on a new line. Continue writing to the right margin.
