Alessandro Bellucci, MD, FACP Executive Director Dr. Sandro Bellucci is the Executive Director of North Shore University Hospital where he is responsible for the daily operations of that 804 bed facility which supports approximately 3, 000 specialist and subspecialist physicians, 16 clinical service lines and corresponding support staff. Dr. Bellucci joined the NSUH medical staff in 1982 and has practiced there for over 30 years. Prior to his appointment as Executive Director he held numerous leadership positions within the Division of Nephrology and Department of Medicine, including serving as executive vice chair and interim chair of the Department of Medicine. Dr. Bellucci served as President of the Medical Staff from May 1999 to April 2000, at the time of the merger of the North Shore Health System with the Long Island Jewish Health System. Dr. Bellucci is an associate professor of medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. As a practicing nephrologist, Dr. Bellucci specializes in acute renal failure, vascular access, acid base disturbances, hypertension, evaluation of renal function and kidney stones. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Bellucci graduated summa cum laude from the University of Medicine and Surgery in Florence, Italy, and completed his residency and chief residency in NYC at an affiliate of New York Medical College. Michael Gitman, MD, FACP Medical Director Dr. Gitman serves as North Shore University Hospital’s Medical Director where he oversees the hospital’s medical affairs, quality management, and patient safety efforts. Dr. Gitman previously served as associate medical director at NSUH. Prior to his current role Dr. Gitman served as the Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs and Quality in the NSLIJ Department of Medicine. During that time he held multiple committee roles including Chair of the LIJ Medication Safety committee, Associate Chair of the LIJ Performance Improvement Coordination Group and Chair of the NSLIJ Department of Medicine Performance Improvement Coordination Group. Dr. Gitman is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine. Over the past decade Dr. Gitman has been extensively involved in physician education. He served as Program Director for the NSUH Nephrology Fellowship and AECOM LIJ Internal Medicine Clerkship Site Director. He has been awarded the NSUH Full. Time Faculty Teacher of the Year Award and the AECOM Samuel M. Rosen Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Gitman has multiple publications and presentations in the field of clinical nephrology. Dr. Gitman is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the American Society of Nephrology. He received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and a medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed a residency and chief residency in internal medicine, as well as fellowship in nephrology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Matthew Bank, MD, FACS Chief, Division of Acute Care Surgery Matthew Bank, MD, FACS is the Chief, Division of Acute Care Surgery, at North Shore University Hospital. In addition, Dr. Bank has served as the Trauma Medical Director of North Shore’s Trauma Center since 2007. In this capacity, in he lead North Shore’s successful efforts to become the first American College of Surgeons Verified Level One Trauma Center in the New York City / Long Island Region. Dr. Bank also has served as the Program Director of North Shore’s Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, and Co-Director, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, since 2006. Dr. Bank is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a New York Surgical Society member. In addition, he is a member of the New York Department of Health (DOH) State Trauma Advisory Committee and the Chairman of the New York State DOH Subcommittee on Trauma Center Performance Improvement. Dr. Bank has published numerous articles relating to trauma and critical care. He is a Department of Defense funded investigator and his current research interests include the immunological response to spinal cord injuries and the outcomes of trauma patients. Dr. Bank grew up on Long Island, graduated from New York Medical College, trained in General Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and completed his training as a critical care fellow at Yale University School of Medicine. Maria Torroella Carney, MD Chief, Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Dr. Maria Carney serves as Chief, Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine in the Department of Medicine and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. She is an internist, geriatrician, and palliative care physician with experience in public health who has dedicated most of her career to the care and advocacy of the elderly and vulnerable populations. Dr. Carney received her medical degree from New York Medical College, completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill/Cornell Medical Center, and completed a research oriented fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She has published articles, chapters, and edited medical books in the areas of dementia, advance directives, palliative medicine, and emergency response for vulnerable populations. From early 2008 through 2011, she was Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Health on Long Island serving a population of 1. 3 million residents. She is the first known physician with a specialty in Geriatric Medicine to serve as commissioner of a health department in New York State. She effectively addressed major challenges including the 2010 H 1 N 1 influenza response, for which she received the BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education Services) Nassau County Council of Superintendents’ Award and the New York State Association of County Health Officials’ Public Health Professional of the Year Award. Her career focus has been to promote longevity and to educate, advocate, and care for the most vulnerable in society. She is a Long Island Trustee of the Energeia Partnership Class of 2011, and founding board member for Nassau Center for Health Initiatives, a 501 c 3 non for profit public health institute for the Long Island region. Tylis Y Chang MD Medical Director, Laboratories, NSUH Vice-Chair, Pathology Informatics Chief Medical Information Officer, Pathology Service Line Dr Chang joined NSUH and North Shore LIJ in 2014 in the capacity of Medical Director for the NSUH Laboratories, as well as Vice-Chair and CMIO for Pathology. In these roles, Dr Chang was tasked with leading Pathology to better serve patients, clinicians and the health care system by leveraging the existing infrastructure as well as evaluating and implementing new IT technologies that could create value to our customers. Prior to joining North Shore, Dr. Chang spent 12 years at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, where he served as the Director of Pathology Informatics as well as the Director of Laboratories at the Weiler Hospital and Montefiore Medical Park overseeing rapid response, transfusion, surgical pathology, oncology, molecular and cytogenetics laboratories. Prior to that, Dr Chang worked as an engineer in Silicon Valley (1998 -2001) and was NIH funded at the University of Rochester and University of Pennsylvania; at the latter, he completed his residency and transfusion medicine fellowship training (1993 -1998). In his spare time, Dr. Chang is a Conservation Fellow at the Wildlife Conservation Society where he helped found a mobile molecular infectious disease laboratory. This laboratory travels around the globe to diagnose disease outbreaks and perform disease surveillance in wildlife of conservation interest. Vishesh Chhibber, MD Medical Director, Transfusion Medicine Vishesh Chhibber, M. D. is currently the Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine at North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Chhibber provides medical oversight of therapeutic apheresis services, donor center operations and our blood bank that supports a level 1 trauma center and a bone marrow transplant program. Prior to arriving at North Shore University Hospital, Dr. Chhibber was the Associate Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine at UMass Memorial Medical Center for approximately 4. 5 years. Dr. Chhibber graduated with honors from the Ross University School of Medicine in 2002. His post graduate training included an internship in Internal Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, followed by an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Massachusetts and a Transfusion Medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Chhibber is board certified in Transfusion Medicine as well as Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Dr. Chhibber has authored several publications in the field of Transfusion Medicine and was an editor for the most recent edition of the Principles of Apheresis Technology-5 th Edition textbook. Jesse Chusid, MD, MBA Associate Medical Director Vice Chairman, Department of Radiology Dr. Jesse Chusid currently serves as the Vice Chairman of Quality and Informatics for the Department of Radiology and as the Associate Medical Director for North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Chusid earned his Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University Medical College. He completed a radiology residency and served as chief resident at North Shore University Hospital and completed a Cardiac and Thoracic Imaging fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He subsequently earned a Master of Business Administration from the New York University, Stern School of Business. Gene Coppa, MD, MBA SVP of Surgical Services for NSLIJHS Chairman of Surgery, NSUH Gene F. Coppa, MD, is senior vice president of surgical services for the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and chairman of surgery at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center. In these roles, he is responsible for developing a strategic plan for surgical services, and facilitating quality improvements in all surgical disciplines across the health system. In addition, he directs program development for the Department of Surgery at NSUH and LIJ, and oversees its surgical residency program. Dr. Coppa received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science degree from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. He completed his residency at New York University–Bellevue Hospital Department of Surgery. He previously served as vice president for surgical services and chairman of surgery at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). He also was SIUH's program director of both the general surgery residency training program as well as the minimally invasive surgery fellowship. A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Coppa's areas of surgical expertise include hepatic and biliary tract, pancreatic, colorectal, trauma and bariatric surgery. He is presently the John D. Mountain, MD, professor of surgery. In addition, he is on the American College of Surgeons' New York State faculty and a course director/instructor for advanced trauma life support. Anne Gottridge, MD Executive Vice Chairman Department of Medicine Dr. Gottridge currently serve as Executive Vice Chair, Department of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, and actively practices Primary Care General Internal Medicine as a member of the North Shore-LIJ Medical Group. Dr. Gottridge received her undergraduate and medical degrees from Case Western Reserve University and completed her Internal Medicine Residency Training at North Shore University Hospital. During her 35 -year tenure at North Shore-LIJ, Dr Gottridge has held various leadership positions in the Department of Medicine, including Primary Care and Internal Medicine Residency Program Director, and Division Chief for General Internal Medicine. Craig Greben, MD FSIR Chief, Vascular & Interventional Radiology Dr. Greben joined the staff of North Shore University Hospital in 1997, after completing Fellowship training in Vascular & Interventional Radiology at The New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In 2001 he was named Division Chief and in 2014 was promoted to Chief of Vascular & Interventional Radiology for the health system. In this role he has helped coordinate and standardize Interventional Radiology care across our healthcare network. Dr. Greben has been appointed to many hospital and medical school committee assignments, including Radiology PICG; Chair, Radiology Research Advisory Committee; Admissions Committee, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine; School of Medicine representative, AAMC Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS); and Board of Governors Managed Care Subcommittee member. His major clinical and research interests include interventional oncology, endovascular management of complex vascular diseases, and embolic therapies. Dr. Greben mentors medical students and residents on clinical research projects, conducts sponsored research, invented several medical devices, lectures nationally and internationally, and published numerous peer-reviewed original reports. Alan R. Hartman, MD Senior Vice President & Executive Director, Cardiothoracic Services North Shore-LIJ Health System Dr. Hartman oversees one of New York State’s busiest and most successful cardiothoracic programs. The combined Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery includes North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park, and Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and Staten Island University Hospital. He is chair and associate professor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. Recently, the North Shore-LIJ cardiac program was selected by the Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute as an exclusive New York area-member of its Cardiovascular Specialty Network which provides cardiac patients with new and enhanced treatment options and greater access to clinical trials. Dr. Hartman, who joined North Shore-LIJ in 2002 as chairman of cardiothoracic surgery, is also one of New York’s most active open-heart surgeons. David Hirschwerk, MD Associate Chairman, Department of Medicine David Hirschwerk, MD has served as Associate Chairman, in the Department of Medicine at NSUH-Manhasset since March, 2014. Dr. Hirschwerk is an attending physician in the division of infectious diseases at NSUH-Manhasset and LIJ Medical Center. He has served, since 2006, as the chair of the infection control committee at North Shore-Glen Cove. His predominant area of clinical interest is the management of infections in immunocompromised patients. He partners closely with the renal transplant team at NSUH-Manhasset in advising on infection prevention and management protocols. Dr. Hirschwerk is an assistant professor at the Hofstra University School of Medicine at NS-LIJ. He is the chair of the student advancement committee at the medical school and he leads and facilitates lectures in the infectious diseases and immunology courses that comprise the curriculum. Dr. Hirschwerk completed his undergraduate education at Brown University and received his Medical Degree at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Barry Kaplan, MD Chairman, NSUH Cardiovascular Services Dr. Kaplan was appointed chairman of cardiology at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center in 2015. Dr. Kaplan joined the health system in 1996 as an interventional cardiologist at NSUH after training at one of the most prestigious interventional cardiology training programs in the country. He was promoted to become the director of the catheterization labs at LIJ in 1999. Under Dr. Kaplan’s leadership, LIJ’s catheterization program flourished with dramatic improvement in volume and quality. In addition to the hospital’s superb performance on quality metrics, Dr. Kaplan has personally earned the New York State Department of Health’s double-asterisk numerous times for patient outcomes that were significantly better than the statewide average among cardiologists performing the procedure. Since 2011, Dr. Kaplan has served as vice chair of cardiology at NSUH and LIJ. He moved his clinical practice from LIJ to NSUH in 2013 and assumed the role of chief of cardiology at NSUH. Board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, Dr. Kaplan has focused on specialized inpatient care for cardiovascular patients. He has published extensively in several cardiology journals, written numerous book chapters and has presented his work at many national meetings. He is an assistant professor of medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Association. Dr. Kaplan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University and received his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv, Israel. He completed a residency in internal medicine from the NYU School of Medicine, a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a second fellowship in interventional cardiology at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan. Jeffrey Katz, MD Chief of Neurovascular in the Dept of Neurology; Director of the Stroke Center and Stroke Unit at North Shore University Hospital Jeffrey M. Katz, MD joined the North Shore-LIJ Health System in 2006 and is the Chief of Neurovascular Services in the Department of Neurology, and Director of the Stroke Center and Stroke Unit at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and the Director of the North Shore-LIJ Health System Tele. Stroke Program. Dr. Katz specializes in cerebrovascular disease and endovascular surgery. Working with colleagues, the stroke center's comprehensive treatment has expanded to include intra-arterial thrombolysis and mechanical embolectomy for acute stroke therapy. Under his directorship, NSUH received Joint Commission disease specific certification in stroke in 2008 and recertification in 2010 and 2012. In a synchronized effort between the Health System’s Stroke Task Force and the Center for Emergency Medical Services, Dr. Katz was integral in the development of the Health System’s Stroke Rescue Program, which coordinates emergency transfers of stroke patients from neighboring Health System and non-system hospitals to NSUH for comprehensive acute stroke care. He and colleagues are currently creating the North Shore-LIJ Health System Tele. Stroke Program. Dr. Katz received his MD from New York University School of Medicine. He completed his neurology residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Katz then went on to complete fellowship training at Cornell in stroke, neurointensive care and interventional neuroradiology and is board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology. Dr. Katz is a member of several professional societies, including the Society of Neuro. Interventional Surgery, the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology, the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the Interventional Section of the AAN. Dr. Katz has published numerous chapters and peer-reviewed articles and is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. Thomas M. Mauri, MD Vice Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. Thomas Mauri serves as Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery for both North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, as well as Vice President of the Orthopaedic Service Line for the North Shore-LIJ Health System. He has been intimately involved in the North Shore University Hospital Medical Staff Society for many years, serving as President in 2002 -2003. He was appointed as a trustee of the NSLIJ Health System and served in that role from 2004 until 2007 until he was made Associate Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery for North Shore and LIJ that year. He has been Chief of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at North Shore University Hospital since 1999. Dr. Mauri graduated with a BS/MD degree from the 6 year combined biomedical program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute/Albany Medical College in 1980, then trained 1 year each at North Shore University Hospital in general surgery and neurosurgery, before entering orthopaedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery, finishing in 1985. He went on to Spine Surgery fellowship at the prestigious Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, then entered private practice as an attending spine surgeon at North Shore in 1986. Dr. Mauri has been co-chair of the Peri-operative Committee at North Shore for over 10 years and has served on the Medical Board for many years as well. He is an active member of the Health System Committee on Quality and Surgical PICG. Nationally, Dr. Mauri has been a long-standing member of the North American Spine Society, where he serves as Co-Chair for the Patient Safety Committee. He has also participated in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Patient Safety Ad Hoc council. Naidich, MD, MBA Chairman, Radiology SVP/Executive Director, Imaging Services Jason J Naidich, MD, MBA has served as Chairman of the Department of Radiology at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center since January 2013. He also serves as Senior Vice President and Executive Director of Imaging Services for the North Shore – LIJ Health System. Dr. Naidich is Associate Professor and Chairman of Radiology at the Hofstra North Shore – LIJ School of Medicine. Dr. Naidich first joined the health system in 2001 as an attending interventional radiologist. Prior to becoming chairman, he served as an Associate Chairman of the Department of Radiology and Vice President of the Imaging Service Line. Dr. Naidich received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, he completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the NYU Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. Salvatore Pardo, MD, FACEP Vice Chairperson, North Shore University Hospital Emergency Department Dr. Pardo was announced as the Vice Chair of the Emergency Department at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in July 2015. The ED at NSUH serves over 90 thousand visitors per year and houses an accredited emergency medicine residency as well as fellowships in ultrasound, toxicology, and sports medicine. Dr. Pardo joined the NS-LIJ Health System in 2001 as an attending physician. He has served in leadership roles at Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center, where he was the Associate Chairperson since 2008 and then Vice Chairperson of the department since 2013. During his time there, he was instrumental in the implementation of the Split Flow Model in the department, which greatly enhanced patient flow and access to care. Dr. Pardo has also served as physician champion for Sunrise Emergency Care since its implementation at LIJMC, which has brought many improvements thus far to documentation, reports, and order sets. He also served as the Chairperson for the LIJMC Performance Improvement Coordinating Group (PICG) as well as secretary for the physicians’ staff society at LIJ. Regina Spinazzola, MD Director of Neonatal Services at North Shore University Hospital Dr. Spinazzola serves as North Shore University Hospital’s Director of Neonatal Services and oversees the delivery of patient care, and safety issues for the infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Katz Women’s Hospital at North Shore. Dr. Spinazzola came to North Shore-LIJ from Babies Hospital-Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center where she completed her fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine. She is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Hofstra-NS-LIJ School of Medicine. A clinical expert in the care of critically ill neonates, she also serves as the neonatology director for the regional perinatal center at North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Spinazzola serves on numerous hospital committees and has been instrumental in developing and implementing quality improvement initiatives to further breast feeding, safe sleep and reduction in long term morbidity in both the NICU and nursery populations. She is an active participant in the Neonatal Service line collaboratives. He is also Vice President of Neurology Services for the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Central and Eastern Regions. Dr. Wright has clinical oversight of neurology services at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), LIJ Medical Center and other facilities on Long Island in Queens. Dr. Wright has served as an attending neurologist at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center for the past 14 years. Most recently, he served as director of performance improvement at North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute. He is also assistant professor of neurology at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. Dr. Wright has held a number of elected and appointed positions at NSUH. He is the current president of the hospital's medical staff society. Dr. Wright also continues to serve on several hospital committees. He previously served on the medical staff credentials committee for 4 years. He has extensive research experience, having served as co-investigator on numerous studies related to carotid artery disease and stroke.
