AP Compared to IB

Both AP & IB Offer courses widely accepted for college credit. Ø Provide educational rigor and quality that helps prepare students for college. Ø Are assessed externally, AP by the College Board and ETS, IB by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Ø

AP differs from IB AP offers a “cafeteria plan” for which students can choose to take one AP course, several, or none. Ø AP results are based upon a single assessment. Ø AP is focused towards the educational system of the United States. Ø

IB differs from AP IB provides a whole, integrated curriculum. Theory of Knowledge provides connections. Ø Extended Essay requires independent research. Ø CAS ensures well-roundedness. Ø Internal Assessments measure a variety of skills. Ø

IB differs from AP IB is based upon multiple assessments, both Internal and External. Ø Independent student choice is often a feature of the assessments, to a greater degree than on AP assessments. Ø Assessments reflect those typically used in colleges to a greater degree than AP assessments. Ø

IB differs from AP Assessments are designed to ensure that students are taught a broad range of research, experimental, analytical, and presentation skills. Ø IB is more international in its outlook. Ø IB places greater stress upon the recognition that there are many differing points of view and students’ ability to weigh the validity of differing outlooks. Ø

Assessment varies across the disciplines Language – Individual oral presentation History – Research paper Experimental Sciences – Experiment designed by student Visual Arts – Research workbook
