Cape Hatteras Light house Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the U. S. at 198 feet. It was built in 1803, but completed in 1870. The “candy stripe” pattern was added in 1873 to make it stand out in the daytime. It was moved 2900 feet in 1999 because of erosion.

It takes 216 steps to get to the lantern room. Three full white diamonds face east and west. The north and south-facing sides have two full black diamonds and have a half of black diamond at the top and bottom of the tower.
