Nonverbal Communication STEREOTYPES, PREJUDICE, AND DISCRIMINATION
Stereotype Widely held beliefs about a group of people ● Based off of race, gender, culture ● Learned from family, peers, media ● Positive and negative stereotypes ● We see behavior that fits stereotypes that we make
Prejudice An attitude (usually negative) toward a cultural group based on little or no evidence ● From one bad experience that you or someone close to you had ● One person shouldn’t be representative of the group as a whole ● Ex. prejudice when hiring employees
Discrimination : Behaviors resulting from stereotypes or prejudice that cause certain people to be denied equal participation or rights ● Exclude, avoid, or distance ● Based on race, gender or other identities ● Ranges from subtle to extreme -Avoiding eye contact -Pulling someone over because of their race/ethnicity
Nonverbal ● Smile at someone when they walk into a room or avoid eye contact ● Listen attentively or not ● Avoid someone walking down the street towards us ● Make someone feel like they aren’t welcome ● Racial bias example

Discussion ● Have you been affected by a positive or negative stereotype? How did you deal with it? ● Why do people discriminate? Are we not able to accept differences between one another, or what? ● What can be done to eliminate discrimination, if anything?
