KRS 159. 070 Section 9 KRS 158. 070 Section 9 was amended to read: Notwithstanding any other statute, each school term shall include no less than the equivalent of the student instructional year in subsection (1)(d) of this section, except that the commissioner of education may grant up to the equivalent of ten (10) student attendance days for school districts that have an alternative instruction plan approved by the commissioner of education for the use of alternative methods of instruction, including virtual learning, on days when the school district is closed for health or safety reasons, on nontraditional days, or on nontraditional time. The district's plan shall demonstrate how teaching and learning in the district will not be negatively impacted. Average daily attendance for purposes of Support Education Excellence in Kentucky program funding during the student attendance days granted shall be calculated in compliance with administrative regulations promulgated by the Kentucky Board of Education.

HB 211 §The Non-Traditional Instruction Option, provides districts missing excessive number of inclement weather days/emergency days the opportunity to conduct school through virtual/nontraditional alternatives. §The district will be required to submit evidence of student participation/student learning and submit a request to the Kentucky Education Commissioner for approval. If approved, the district would not have to make up those days.

Non-Traditional Instructional Days Requirements • Student participation is required for all students K -12. • School districts determine the participation method for students (online, paper-pencil, project based). • School districts are required to track and submit staff and student evidence of participation on an NTI Day.

What is a Non-Traditional Instruction Day or “Snow-Mazing Day”? KDE has approved our application to participate in Non-Traditional Instructional Days (Snowmazing Days). This allows for learning to take place when school is closed for unforeseen circumstances. The goal is to avoid an interruption of the learning process. If students engage in these learning experiences, then a Snow-Mazing Day will be counted as a regular school day, and not have to be made up at the end of the year.

When Can NTI Days be Used? • • Snow Days Other Weather Related Closings Wide Spread Illness District Wide Closings Only

TCPS’ Snow-Mazing Days § NTI Days will not be utilized on the 1 st Snow Day § 172 Student Days in 2016 -2017 school calendar § Goal to be out of school by Memorial Day (May 29) § 15 Make-up days built into the current calendar § District will review calendar options § NTI utilized as final option (due to costs Federal Meal reimbursements and Transportation reimbursements)

Snow-Mazing Staff Responsibilities Principals/Assistant Principals • When campus is deemed safe and without jeopardizing personal safety work regular hours in assigned building • Be available to answer questions from students, parents, teachers, staff members and community members • Support and monitor online assignments • Approve classified work schedules and locations • Analyze and report on staff and student participation and mastery rates

Snow-Mazing Staff Responsibilities Teachers • Maintain an online presence through website, Schoology or Summit Base Camp ( LMS) to track student progress, and provide appropriate feedback on assigned material • Monitor student progress of digital content by logging into online programs • Maintain an online presence and be available between 8: 00 AM -11: 00 AM and 12: 00 PM 3: 00 PM • Communicate with students who have been assigned packets or who have not made significant progress with assigned online content • When campus is deemed safe and without jeopardizing personal safety report to work site to assist students, track progress and provide appropriate student support • Log hours, contacts and description of work completed on NTI day(s) • Analyze and report to building administrators percent assignment completion and mastery of content rate

Snow-Mazing Instructional Delivery § Teachers with principal input have determined the type of NTI instructional plans – ensuring a print/text option in the case that web access or technology is not available. § Options include but are not limited to: § School-wide Focus § Interdisciplinary/Team Learning Plan § Grade-Level Focus § Individually Planned Lessons § Blended approach using IXL, Dream Box, Mathletics, Spelling City, Study Island, etc. § PBL activities § Summit Personalized Academy work § Flipped Classrooms § Skyped lessons

Student Snow-Mazing Folders • Should Include – – All student assignments (technology based or paper/pencil) – Student Login Credentials & Passwords for any online or stand-alone programs utilized on NTI days – Log-In Procedures and Instructions (to facilitate parent access*/student support) – NTI Day Communication Procedures & Teacher Contact Info

Snow-Mazing Communication § Schoology and Base-Camp will be utilized as the Learning Management Systems to communicate with students. There maybe others that your students are currently using i. e. . Google Classroom, See-saw, Blackboard, Edmodo, Moodle, Haiku, Edgenuity etc. §Teachers will need to updated LMS and/or webpages to communicate with parents/guardians and students. § Remind 101 and “Totally-Free Conference Calls” are additional communication tools for teachers to communicate with parents/guardians and students. § District Technology staff will serve as a resource for teachers when creating/maintaining Schoology accounts and/or creating/maintaining their teacher websites. § In the event students do not have internet access or a device on an Snow-Mazing Day, devices may be checked-out, assignments may be preloaded on a thumb-drive or packets sent home. Additionally two (2) days for every Snow-Mazing Day implemented will be given to “make-up” assigned tasks.
