SCIAMACHY Quality Working Group The SQWG was established in 2006 to – Take responsibility for the whole development cycle from scientific studies to operational products – Serve as sole point of contact for agencies (ESA, DLR, NIVR, BIRA) for everything processor related – Delivers the baseline prototype processors Level 0 -1 b, Level 1 b-2 and user calibration tool The SQWG work is split into three topics – Level 0 -1 studies (Lead SRON) – Level 1 b-2 studies (Lead IUP Bremen, also SQWG prime) – Algorithm Baseline Delivery (Lead DLR-IMF) – All parties contribute to all topics and are teaming up according to needs and expertise Slide 5 IGARSS 2011 > G. Level 0 -1 b Processing The Level 0 -1 b Processor development cycle is – Calibration algorithm development by SRON and DLR-IMF – Implementation into prototype by DLR-IMF – Verification comparing reference algorithm with implementation – Implementation of operational processor by industry (DJO) – „Factory Acceptance Test“ (FAT) between operational processor and prototype Level 1 b data are freely available from ESA With the freely available scial 1 c tool the user can filter and calibrate data as needed (individual calibrations steps are switchable) Current Version: 7. 04, full re-processing under way Slide 6 IGARSS 2011 > G. Philosophy: Level 1 b data contain all data necessary to produce calibrated spectra in one file. That implies the tasks – Extract calibration data from Level 0 measurements and store them into Auxiliary Data Files (ADFs) – Process Level 0 data detector, combine them with appropriate calibration data from the ADFs to generate the Level 1 b product In operational processing, the Level 1 b-c step is done during Level 2 processing (same code as scial 1 c tool) Degradation correction factors calculated by IUP Bremen in dedicated S/W and applied in Level 1 b-2 processing for the current version Slide 7 IGARSS 2011 > G. Level 1 b – 2 Processing Operationally, SCIAMACHY provides the following products – Total columns of trace gases from UV/VIS to SWIR – Profiles of trace gases – Cloud information from Nadir measurements – Height resolved cloud information from Limb measurements – Aerosol Index Information Scientific products from various institutions provide (amongst others) – Greenhouse gas information – Trace gases from occultation measurements of the sun – Tropospheric trace gas columns – Additional cloud and aersol parameters Slide 11 IGARSS 2011 > G. Level 1 b-2 Processing – Processor Development Algorithms are developed by BIRA, DLR-IMF, IUP-Bremen, KNMI All algorithms are integrated into operational processor by DLRIMF. The development cycle is – Implementation as new algorithm becomes ready – Verification of individual algorithms and “regression test” for unchanged algorithms – For new operational version: Freeze of algorithms and testing of all products with new Level 1 b version (if any) – Direct implementation of prototype into operational ground segment – FAT to check if prototype and processor in operational envirnment give the same result Validation of V 5. 01 showed deficiencies in SO 2 and CO VCDs New Version 5. 02 was fast tracked and re-processing is currently prepared to provide optimal products for the whole mission Slide 12 IGARSS 2011 > G.
