SISO Tactical Datalink Study Group Link-16 Product Development Group Introduction to Study Group and Product Development Group
SISO • International Organization chartered to develop simulation standards • Developed DIS (IEEE 1278) • Developed HLA (IEEE 1561) • Hosts 4 Conferences a year • Spring, Fall Simulations Interoperability Workshop (SIW) • Summer “Euro” SIW • Conference for Synthetically Generated Forces Website at: http: //www. sisostds. org
TDL SG Goals • Create a standard that can be used to exchange Link-16 data! • Create standard method to simulate a Link-16 network • Build upon previous work to the greatest extent possible (STANAG 5602, AF DMT, etc) • Study group will concentrate upon developing the technical solutions for standardization

TDL SG Approach • Draft changes to the DIS EBV document • Submit as package of changes after SG approval • Goal is Jan 03 final submittal to EBV document Avoid any changes to the IEEE Specifications, if at all possible • Identify HLA methods and approaches from work in DIS • Develop Base Object Model (BOM) • Kick-Off PDG to develop SISO Standard from TDL SG Product
TDL SG History • • Jul 01 - TACCSF internal project to review current DIS Link-16 Implementation • Nov 01 - Meeting at I/ITSEC Oct 01 - Formed “grass roots” working group after community response to informal inquiries • • Initial Presentation of ideas, technical discussion Decided to pursue becoming “official” SISO Study Group • • • Dec 01 - SISO EXCOM Approves TOR • • Jun 02 - Interim SG meeting at TACCSF Feb 02 - SG Reflector, AFAMS webpage established Mar 02 - First official meeting of TDL SG (Spring SIW) Jul 02 - SG Meeting at Euro-SIW Sep 02 - SG Meeting at Fall SIW Sep 02 - Link-16 PDG Kickoff
TDL SG Current Status • DIS and HLA structures and methodologies 90% defined • Finishing guidelines for High Fidelity Synchronization • Initial Draft of “TADIL TALES” presented • Document being polished/finalized • HLA sections being added
TDL SG Current Status (Cont’d) • Reference Implementation by Northrop Grumman • Funded by USAF Modeling and Simulations Office under Joint Synthetic Battlespace Initiative • Being implemented in CCD Product, • Fidelity level 3 testing to occur 24 -27 Sept • SISO Product Development Group standing up • PDG will start from Study Group product • PDG soon to be electing officers • PDG scheduled to enter balloting process by Spring 2003
TDL SG Fall 02 Update: Way Ahead • TDL SG will be briefing at: • NATO NIETWG/TDL ITS (Sept 02) • NMIA Datalinks Conference (Nov 02) • International Data Link Symposium (Oct 02) • (Tentative) DISA Link-16 OIRG/DLWG (TBD) • • • PDG Kickoff and Elections (late Sept 02) • Complete submittals of changes to DIS-EBV (Oct/Nov 02) Next Year TOR for TDL Study Group? • • HLA completion of Link-16 (if needed) Link-11 A, 22, TIBS? Standards work outside SISO (NATO, DISA, IEEE)
Challenges with Current DIS/HLA Standards • DIS Standard lacks detail for interoperability • DIS was “never finished” • No standard enumeration list for TDL types within DIS • • Multiple DIS implementations in the “wild” • No methodology defined for HLA Ability to exchange TADIL-J messages, no ability to simulate JTIDS networks
Goals for New Standard • • Standard, interoperable implementation • • • Ability to ease transition from old formats to new Easy initial implementation • Minimal impact on current users, e. g. NATO SIMPLE Standard Effects level simulation of JTIDS net Ability to route datalink data separately from “truth” data Minimize bandwidth utilization Discrete definitions of fidelity Identify FOM/SOM data items for HLA JTIDS emulation
Goals for New Standard Effects to be simulated • Timeslot allocation/metering of data with nominal values or from an actual NDL • Segmenting of data into NPGs • Segmenting of data into Nets • Multi-netting • Crypto-netting • Net entry procedures • Synchronization • Multiple NTRs
Goals for New Standard Effects to be simulated • Relnav • Multiple JTIDS units transmitting at same time • Waveform/RF simulation • Antenna, propagation details • Additional JTIDS Datatypes • Link-16 Enhanced Throughput • VMF • Free Text (Voice/Imagery)
Goals for New Standard Effects not covered • Individual Pulses • Effects of conflicting pulses if hopping patterns coincide
Comparison/Contrast of “DIS-J” to “SIMPLE” • • SIMPLE encompasses and extends DIS • Not only TADIL, but environment as well TADIL-TALES is a part of DIS and HLA TADIL-TALES currently *only* addresses Link-16 • Other datalinks will be efforts of the Study Group over the next year • Does not address additional needs in the environment generation TADIL-TALES addresses needs of higher fidelity Link-16 RF simulation
TDL SG On-Line Resources • • • AFAMS Hosted Discussion Server & Document Repository • http: //www. afams. af. mil • Click on programs and exercises, listed on this page • Discussion Server still in beta form SISO Reflector • http: //www. sisostds. org (go to reflectors) DMSO Reflector • Currently not in use, has archives for Nov-Jan 01

Tactical Datalink Study Group Technical Overview of Work in Progress
TDL SG Transmitter PDU
TDL SG Fidelity (TSA) Levels
TDL SG Signal PDU
TDL SG Message Type Identifiers
Transmitter PDU Required Data
Signal PDU Required Data
Link-16 Standard in HLA • Base Object Model (BOM) that will attach to a parent Federate Object Model (FOM) • Will attach to any parent FOM that has a Radio. Transmitter Type • • MC 02, RPR-FOM, Australia Virtual Ship-FOM, DMT-FOM, NASMP FOM Will have two time modes of operation • Real-Time (exactly the same as DIS) • Non Real-Time • • • Latency Buffer set to 0 MS HLA will compensate for network latencies and signals will be perceived/arrive as they would in the “real” world Will be able to run faster or slower than “real-time”
TDL SG Lessons Learned • • • Grow Industry support • Encourage and empower community to develop standards products or recommendations for standards products On-line IT infrastructure support is critical General Industry comment is tough to get--apathy reigns! Advertise, advertise! • The next person may have critical inputs--and the solution to *all* your problems! There will *always* be critics and nay-sayers! • And usually they will be vocal--there’s always one!
Any Questions?
