NHS Education Scotland, Practice Education Programme Allied Health Professions (AHP) Support and Supervision workstream flash report – Spring 2019 Aim and vision Scotland’s National Position Statement on Supervision, launched April 2018, states that all AHP practitioners, irrespective of their level of practice or experience, should have access to, and be prepared to make constructive use of supervision. The aim of this workstream is to enable a ‘Once for Scotland’ approach to the development of education and training resources and opportunities for the AHP workforce to ensure they feel supported and have the appropriate knowledge, skills and attributes to participate in supervision. Next Steps Progress to date • An AHP national working group (NWG) was developed to deliver on this workstream. Group membership: • Ann. Marie Anderson, NHS Ayrshire and Arran • Lorna Darrie, NHS Lothian • Jane Dudgeon, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde • Julie Gillespie, NHS Grampian • Gail Nash, NHS Education Scotland • Lynne Spence , NHS Orkney • NWG are working with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) to develop further guidance on the use and storage of the supervision record • Presentation of work at NES NMAHP Educational Conference in May 2019 • A report and action plan from the national data is being completed • Each Practice Education Lead (PEL) has their own board data and is working with their networks to develop local implementation plans. NWG are developing a reporting template to support PELs communicate this data in a meaningful way • NWG will be reviewing educational resources to ensure relevance for AHP staff and developing resources where gaps exist. The data from the survey will inform this work. This will also inform discussions about an educational model of face to face training for AHPs. • An online national survey was conducted between September and November 2018 to gather baseline data on supervision activity and identify learning requirements of the workforce. The survey had 2565 (22% response rate). • NMAHP Clinical Supervision e-learning resource for supervisors and supervisees was launched on TURAS in July 2018 • PELs are reviewing their local policies and guidelines and ensuring these map to the position statement. Where there are no policies or guidance available these are being co-produced based on the principles in the position statement. • The AHP Practice Education Community of Practice will be updated to ensure the AHP workforce have access to up to date, relevant educational resources NWG are linking with a number initiatives the PELs are involved with and a number of Quality Improvement (QI) projects across Scotland, to ensure shared learning and spread of improvements • The NWG will undertake a review and evaluation of the impact of this work in 2020/21 • • Contact Gail Nash, Senior Educator, NHS Education Scotland for more details.
