NFPA: Fire Apparatus Standards OVERVIEW OF PROCESS NFPA regulations require a review/affirmation of all Standards at least every 5 years. Standards review can be “short-cycled” in order to include significant developments or information.

#1911 DEFINITIONS a) In-service apparatus: Any apparatus made available for use under emergency conditions to transport personnel and equipment and to support suppression of fires and mitigation of other hazardous conditions. This includes reserve and standby apparatus.

#1911 DEFINITIONS b) Out-of-service: The condition when an apparatus is not useable for it's intended purpose due to unsafe and/or in-operable condition.

#1911 DEFINITIONS c) Performance Tests: Tests made after a fire apparatus has been put into service to determine if it’s performance meets a pre-determined specification or standard.

#1911 Qualified Person: “A person who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate, professional standing, or skill, and who, by knowledge, training, and experience, has demonstrated the ability to deal with problems relating to a particular subject matter, work, or project. ”

#1911 Three (3) levels of inspection: 1. Category A: FD PERSONNEL 2. Category B: FD PERSONNEL or SERVICE PERSONNEL (authorized repair facility or actual manufacturer) 3. Category C: accredited testing organization (approved by aerial manufacturer)

#1911 Frequency of inspection: Complete apparatus inspections and maintenance shall be completed at a minimum level of once (1) a year.

#1911 Out-of-service criteria: Shall be the responsibility of the authority having jurisdiction to take the apparatus out-of-service, if deficiencies are encountered—TWO LEVELS. 1) “Required and defined” items in standard 2) “Suggested” items

Request for Interpretation 1. GFI: not required on fire apparatus (see standard for information) 2. NON-SLIP HOSE BED SURFACE: Not required
