NFL LOCKOUT Frank Igah
The NFL may have to forgo its 2011 season to save money, moreover, resulting in a Lockout. The NFL does not have enough money to pay the players and fund the season. The owners and players have to come to a bargaining agreement. This all has to be done before a season can be started.
So how do the players feel about this possible Lockout? The average NFL player makes around $850, 000 per year. 22% of the NFL’s 1700 athlete’s have no savings to fall back on should the league end result in a lockout. if the lockout occurs, a lot of these players will be in a lot of financial problems. Also, among NFL players who have been retired for two years, 78% are bankrupt or financially stressed, mostly due to divorce and/or lack of a job. 22% of the players are already living paycheck to paycheck
The main question to answer is where did all the NFL’s money go and why is there now a financial problem in this league. When the Owners signed their last deal with the networks that broadcast NFL games in 2009, it is believed they built the contracts in such a way that they took less money upfront to guarantee that the networks would still pay the owners if there was a lockout and games were missed.
However, everyone is not against the NFL lockout Most of the owners to these teams are worth billions, like the owner of the Washington Redskins Daniel Snyder, who is worth $1. 1 billion. These owners own yachts, submarines, helicopters etc and would love to just enjoy all of this while still getting paid
Who are people forgetting will suffer The people with jobs inside of the NFL Not having an NFL season will ultimately damage the economy it’s estimated it would cost each NFL city $160 million and 3, 000 jobs That’s 93, 000 jobs nationwide!
Who else will suffer? The Fans and Coaches the fan based opinion on the NFL lockout is that it is a horrific decision. the coaches are not just not going to be paid, but cannot see or talk to their players
Present Day A pre-season schedule has been released for the NFL teams. This seems like a step towards the right direction but in reality this really means nothing. without a union agreement this is nothing.
Outcome… Each day the NFL is supposedly getting closer to their decision to be made. Lawyers for the NFL and league officials are meeting with the judge assigned to supervise court-ordered mediation between the NFL and its locked-out players. hopefully a verdict will be reached soon.
