Newton's Third Law of Motion • Newton’s third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction • For example, you push on a wall it may be surprising that the wall pushes back at you

Newton’s Third Law in Depth • If you push on a wall, it will push back at you with the same force you exerted for example a bird flying, it pushes the air down the air pushes it up • When one object exerts a force on another object the second object exerts the same size force on the first object

Do They Cancel Each Other Out? • No surprisingly they can’t • These are often called an action-reaction force pair • They don’t cancel because they act on different objects, most cancel on the same objects

Newton’s Laws in Sports • It may not be obvious but Newton’s laws are involved in sports too • They apply when objects aren’t even moving • Like swimming, you push the water back and the water pushes you forward

Scientific Discoveries • The same with a rocket, the gas molecules are pushed down by the rocket, the gas molecules push the rocket up • It would be impossible to walk without it, we push from the ground, the ground pushes us forward
