INTRODUCTION • Dual Enrollment as the Wild West • Significant differences in the program across the country; national/regional differences matter to any decision • Reference: http: //ecs. force. com/mbdata/MBQuest. NB 2? Rep=DE 1508 • Where does Florida fall? • Some states refer to Dual Enrollment as “Dual Credit” • Hillsborough County Students may participate in Dual Enrollment at Hillsborough Community College or The University of South Florida • Requirements differ for each institution

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Definition: The term “dual enrollment” refers to an arrangement where students are enrolled in courses that count for both high school and college credit. These programs are also called “dual credit” or “concurrent enrollment. ” –U. S. DIFFERENT TYPES OF DUAL ENROLLMENT On-Campus Off-Campus Early Admissions -at the local High School

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DUAL ENROLLMENT On-Campus Off-Campus Early Admissions -at the local High School -at a local HCC/USF branch -Full-time off campus -taught by qualified High School teachers -HCC/USF sponsored class -Student gives up class rank -Ability to take 4 classes (12 Cr. Hr. ) -HCC sponsored class -USF with higher entrance requirements and special restrictions -10 credit hour/semester limit **Collegiate Academy Examples** -Does not attend local high school -higher entrance requirements

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Positives • Flexible Scheduling (jobs, extracurricular, Saturday classes, evening classes, etc)

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Positives • Flexible Scheduling (jobs, extracurricular, Saturday classes, evening classes, etc) • Wide menu of classes encompassing many options that do not exist in high school • Over 100 Pages of classes; including Career Tech and Specific Progams not found in High Schools

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Positives • Provides students with a perspective of what college is

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Positives • Provides students with a perspective of what college is like (increased participation rates in colleges) • Students do not waste time taking courses that do not count (example: student that has fulfilled all graduation requirements for high school) • AP/IB classes exist in very specific areas; Dual Enrollment can add/enrich to the available classes or provide opportunities beyond the school day • Credit by class, not by standardized test • Saving money: very direct way of reducing college costs • Opportunity to explore careers while in high school

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Positives • On-campus Dual Enrollment can be convenient and safe •

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Positives • On-campus Dual Enrollment can be convenient and safe • Transferrable (**Let’s revisit this later**) • Diverse set of students/backgrounds • Access to labs/facilities that may exceed the local high school • For the most advanced students, such as with math, access to college math can be valuable • GPA payoff is substantial; particularly when summer classes are accessed

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Negatives • Dual enrollment starts a college transcript; low grades in

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Negatives • Dual enrollment starts a college transcript; low grades in college courses greatly impact future opportunities • University admissions: is there a focus? If your school offers AP Chem, why did you choose to take Chemistry at HCC? • No Edsby or parental ability to monitor; Special Education concerns • No schedule changes beyond a point; impact on tax dollars • Equivalent to AP on paper; is it the same experience? • Is your 14 year old child ready for adult conversations and the college experience?

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Negatives • Transportation/bureaucratic steps to participate • Not much data exists

DUAL ENROLLMENT • Negatives • Transportation/bureaucratic steps to participate • Not much data exists on student outcomes • W=Withdrawals impact a students completion percentage; students must maintain a certain percentage to qualify for financial aide (Ws and Fs affect this number). • Cap of 60 credit hours (estimated/varies per school) may be transferred • Undecided major students could be impacted by surcharges (change of major, fail to graduate on-time • 10 credit hour limit, per semester (typically 3 classes)

ADVANCED PLACEMENT • Definition The College Board’s AP courses are college-level classes in a wide variety of subjects that you can take while still in high school. They offer you challenging course work and a taste of what college classes are like. When you take an AP course, you have the opportunity to take the AP Exam in that subject. AP Exams are given in May. They’re two- to three-hour tests made up of multiple-choice and freeresponse questions. The exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. -Big. Future/College Board **College Credit Based on AP Exam Scores**

ADVANCED PLACEMENT • Positives • Rigorous coursework to prepare students for college • Measurable

ADVANCED PLACEMENT • Positives • Rigorous coursework to prepare students for college • Measurable performance (AP Exam) • Taken at local high school; access to Edsby and ability for parents to interact with teachers • Transparent credit procedure (AP Credit Policy website) • Performance on AP Exam is independent on grade for class; students can experience success in class, even without passing exam; “safe environment” without starting college transcript • Student can exit an AP course without impacting financial aid or college transcript

ADVANCED PLACEMENT • Positives • AP Students have higher participation rates in 4 year

ADVANCED PLACEMENT • Positives • AP Students have higher participation rates in 4 year universities • High immersion in subject matter (class meets daily) • No limit on class selections; Florida Virtual AP options exist for flexible scheduling • Opportunity to lower tuition costs • For highest performers, students can skip subjects (AP English example)

ADVANCED PLACEMENT • Negatives • Credit by exam; poor test takes have low chance

ADVANCED PLACEMENT • Negatives • Credit by exam; poor test takes have low chance at earning college credit • Lengthy exams that are very taxing on students; high stress • No guarantee of college credit: https: //apscore. collegeboard. org/scores/about-apscores/score-distributions// • High volumes of work (in-class and homework) • Not the same experience as a college class • AP Exams only in May; no ability to enrich over summer • Score reports cost money; possible fees for rescheduled exams • Very structured exam schedule during a busy time of year (conflicts, transportation, etc)

AP VS. DUAL ENROLLMENT: THOUGHT PROVOKING DISCUSSIONS • Duplicating credit? • Some students take

AP VS. DUAL ENROLLMENT: THOUGHT PROVOKING DISCUSSIONS • Duplicating credit? • Some students take too many classes in required areas…poor advisement? University admissions? Class rank and GPA manipulation? • Is there a plan to course selections (AP or DE)? • Random selections may show a lack of focus • If you start AP/DE as a freshman, is that too soon? • Estimated cap around 60 Credit hours

AP VS. DUAL ENROLLMENT: THOUGHT PROVOKING DISCUSSIONS • Hurdle #1: • Is an “A”

AP VS. DUAL ENROLLMENT: THOUGHT PROVOKING DISCUSSIONS • Hurdle #1: • Is an “A” at Hillsborough Community College in ENC 1101 the same as an “A” at Harvard University in EXPOS 20? • Hurdle #2: • If your high school offers an AP version of a course but you take it at HCC/USF…is there a reason? If you consistently take core classes at HCC/USF when your high school offers AP…is there a reason? If your high school has a pass rate on AP exams that exceeds the national average but you choose to take the class at HCC/USF…does this mean anything?

AP VS. DUAL ENROLLMENT • Findings: • DE students more likely to go to college but less likely to go to a 4 year university • This isn’t necessarily a bad thing • AP students are much more likely to go to a 4 year university • AP/DE students fair about as well as AP students overall, with respect to university representation • AP/DE both improve student performance and retention
