WHY IS THIS PROJECT NECESSARY?

This Project is Necessary To: • Upgrade trunk water main distribution network system Reinforcing the transmission (High Pressure) system Upgrading the watermain network distribution system by connecting two end points of the existing system from Flushing to Bayside. • Improve water distribution grid system This system is being supplied by the transmission or trunk or high pressure water main distribution system. This network comprises a grid of distribution water mains with pipes diameter ranging from 8”, 12”, 20”, and 24”. The existing mains are from 1912 to 1940, they are C. I. P ( Cast Iron Pipe with lead joint) and reaching their useful. They will be replaced with Ductile Iron Pipe, more resilient with no lead joint. • Ensure proper delivery of necessary services Delivering proper, clean and adequate water to the businesses, residents and fire fighting department. • Upgrade sanitary and storm sewer Updating the sewer will increase the system drainage capacity and help reducing flooding in the neighborhood. Water Main Break Floods Flatiron District (2013) A massive water main break in Flatiron sent water cascading into a subway station at Broadway and 23 rd St. late Friday morning, leading portions of the N and Q lines to be closed all afternoon. The main — a 36 -inch pipe dating to 1915 — ruptured at 24 th St. and Broadway about 10: 45 a. m. Friday, February 1, 2013, flooding area streets and sending water rushing down into the subway system. The MTA says N/Q service is suspended between De Kalb and 57 th and 7 th or R service between Queens Plaza and Whitehall as the power has been turned off at the flooded station. Also? Expect a lot of traffic around Madison Square Park today. Massive water main break drenches a subway station in Flatiron, knocking out service on the N and Q lines for hours The break was at 24 th St. and Broadway, and sent water flooding down into the subway station at 23 rd St. and Broadway.
