Board of Ethics ASHA Bylaws Article VIII – Professional Standards and Ethics, Section 8. 3, discusses the establishment of a Board of Ethics that shall 1. formulate, publish, and amend a Code of Ethics containing the professional responsibilities by which members and certificate holders shall be bound; 2. develop educational programs and materials on ethics for distribution to members and certificate holders, academic programs, and other agencies and associations; 3. adjudicate complaints alleging violations of the Code of Ethics.
Ethics Program Board of Ethics v Develop and Monitor the Code of Ethics v Emerging ethical issues are reviewed to ensure the Code provides the appropriate direction for the professions and the public served. v Ethics Education Subcommittee v Ethics educational materials assist those in the professions to understand their ethical responsibilities and provides a resource to universities and state licensing boards. v Complaint Processing & Adjudication v A system of procedures is maintained to ensure that the mechanism is available to the membership and public for handling alleged violations of the Code of Ethics.

Member Roles & Responsibilities v Attend all meetings and participate in all conference calls. v Complete assignments delegated by the chairs or ex officio. v Acknowledge all communications concerning board work by requested deadline. v Inform his/her employer of the responsibilities and commitments required of board members. (Letters upon request. ) v Prepare for meetings and conference calls by reviewing all relevant material and pertinent background information. v Participate in adjudication discussions, BUT maintain a professional demeanor when other ideas or conflicting viewpoints are presented. v Advocate on behalf of the professions and protect the public.

Travel & Reimbursement Policies (continued) Reimbursement • Expense reports are due to Heather no later than 55 days after the meeting • Submit original detailed receipt(s) with a signed Travel Expense report (no receipts for meals needed) • Include a copy of your electronic airline ticket (if applicable) • Include a copy of Courtesy Travel’s e-mail message that contains your itinerary and cost • Note “PROV” on meal lines when ASHA provided your meal • Keep a copy of your expense report and receipts • Consult the Volunteer Travel Policy posted on collaborate. asha. org for more information

Adjudication Process (continued) Appeal BOE FCH Decision to the BOD • Must be requested in writing within 30 days of ICH determination • Transcript of FCH made available to Respondent • Schedule hearing with Appeals Panel appointed by BOD President Final Decision • Issued within 30 days after latest decision • If public sanction, then reported to state licensing board(s) and/or board(s) of ed. , published in the ASHA Leader, and recorded on member’s official record.
Adjudication Process (continued) Consent Agenda � Lead reviewer has discretion to place a case on the consent agenda for insufficient evidence � Reviewer must contact the director of ethics to discuss the case at least one week before the meeting � Director of Ethics will consult with the BOE chair on questionable cases � BOE members review the case and can remove it from the consent agenda for adjudication at anytime before or during the meeting � Cases on the consent agenda will be handled by a single vote
Adjudication Process (continued) Reinstatement At the completion of the revocation or withholding period, individuals who are interested in reinstating their certification/membership may submit a Petition for Reinstatement to the BOE to request a Reinstatement Order. � BOE deliberations are guided by the premise that reinstatement must be in the best interests of ASHA and persons served professionally. � � After review, the BOE may �approve with conditions and/or requirements �table pending receipt of further information �Deny with time limit for re-petitioning BOE • Approved Petitioners may then apply to ASHA Certification for reinstatement of their certification/membership.
