Out and About Journey Planning
What did we learn last time? ü Choose safe routes ü Use crossings if you can ü If there’s no crossing, find somewhere safe – away from parked cars and bends in the road ü Stay focussed – never cross while using a mobile or stereo ü Don’t trust traffic ü Use the Green Cross Code
• THINK FIRST • STOP • USE YOUR EYES AND EARS • WAIT UNTIL IT'S SAFE TO CROSS • LOOK AND LISTEN • ARRIVE ALIVE
Where can you go?
Your personal checklist 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Money, including some for emergencies A phone card or mobile phone Let someone know who you are with Let someone know where you are going Work out how to get there Arrange a time to be home List of telephone numbers in case you need to ring someone 8. A plan in case something goes wrong
OUT AND ABOUT • What would you do if? …….
You have missed the bus home Is there another bus I can catch? Can I go back into school and phone someone?
One of your friends asks for a lift on your bike • Best not to risk it! • How good are you at negotiating or saying no?
Two of your friends are fighting on the bus • If you can’t calm the situation down – keep out of the way. • Let the driver know that there is a problem • If things are getting out of hand it may be safer for the bus to be stopped
Need to phone but no money • Make sure you know how to make a reverse charge call • Dial 100 and ask for the operator to connect them to the telephone number that they need • On mobile phones there is the option of dialling 0800 ‘reverse’
Quick Fire Round Take with me or Leave at home?
Have you done any of these? Hands up! • • • Planned a journey Walked to somewhere Done cycle training Cycled somewhere Travelled on a bus Travelled on a train/underground
Safer journeys Think about a journey that you know – to school perhaps. Picture the journey in your mind What do you see? Now think walking somewhere new. Picture the journey. Is it as clear?
Practice, practice! • It is a really good idea to practice your journey to your secondary school during the summer holidays. • Plan your route and walk it with your parents • Work out where it is safe to cross the road • Think about …. . • www. travelinesoutheast. org. uk
Getting to school How long will the journey take? What time will I have to leave in the morning? How am I going to travel? Who will I travel with?
Getting home from school What time will I normally leave? How am I going to travel? How long will the journey take? What time will I get home?
Now think about – It’s dark – can I be seen easily What if ……? Bus Pass Travelcar d Have I got lots to carry? Cycle Helmet Is it raining? Money y I sta at ind h e b ol? o h sc
How will my journey affect the planet? • What is climate change? • How does using a car for the journey to school affect the environment? www. direct. gov. uk/en/Environmentandgreenerliving/Thewiderenvironment/Climat echange/DG_072920 www. carbondetectives. org. uk
Sustainable Transport Cycle Walk Car Share www. travelbuster. org. uk Bus
Plenary ü Can you remember your checklist ü Have a plan for when things go wrong ü Practice your journey before you start at your new school ü Always think ‘what if …. ? ’ And have a plan ü Think about the way that you will travel – is it kind to the environment?
