Review of addition and subtraction facts Addition is the "putting together" of two groups of objects and finding how many in all. Subtraction tells "how many are left" or "how many more or less. " We say addition and subtraction are inverse operations because one operation can "undo" the other operation. Adding 3 and 5 to get 8 is the opposite of 8 minus 5 leaving 3. 3 + 5= 8 addends sum and 8 -5=3 difference

Sometimes, mistakes are made when we subtract. Estimating is one way to check the reasonableness of our work. But, we can also use addition to check our subtraction. You already know that you can use fact families. For example: The subtraction problem 9 - 5 = 4 can be checked with the addition problem 4 + 5 = 9. The same can be done with larger numbers.

When a student adds 543 + 328 the answer gotten is 861. Is the student correct? Check the addition with subtraction. 5 11 861 - 543 318 This should be 328, so the answer is wrong.
