Down the St. Lawrence �Gaspe Peninsula became the first province of New France but settling there proved to be hard �French fishing fleets began to explore the Atlantic coast and went down the St. Lawrence River �Early voyages down the river created alliances with First Nations that helped the French settlers occupy land �Merchants in the colonies soon realized there was something valuable: fur-bear animals
Quebec City � 1608 - Samuel de Champlain and his company founded the city of Quebec, second permanent French settlement in the colony of Canada �Survival was hard and Champlain began to ally with the Algonquin and Montagnais in the area… but these two tribes were at war with the Iroquois �Google Map: Search for Lake Champlain �Battle was fought against Iroquois around Lake Champlain �Alliance between France, Huron and Algonquin was solidified
