Domination of the Fur Trade

Growth of the Territory
Royal Government 1663 -1763 n King of France disappointed in population growth of the colony - colony was mostly men who had no interest in “settling down” - fur trade companies had promised to bring settlers in exchange for total control of New France, but they broke their promise n Royal Government took power away from fur trading companies - New France would now be ruled directly by France so that population could grow!
Population Growth Jean Talon was the first Intendant of the colony
Jean Talon encouraged the following groups to emigrate to New France: 1. Filles du Roy Push Orphans Pull Husbands
2. Soldiers from the Carignan Salieres - to defend colony Push job Pull perks
3. Farmers Push - lack of land - mean landlords Pull - free land - new life
Growth Incentives 1. Baby Bonuses - for couples who had at least 10 children 2. Fines on men and women who remained unmarried 3. Men could not get involved in fur trade if they weren’t married
Geography of Settlement Seigneurial System established an orderly method of settling people in New France
Growth of population centres around fur trading posts 1. Quebec 1608 2. Trois Rivieres 1634 3. Ville Marie 1641
Missionaries Continued to play a key role in: 1. converting/”civilizing” natives 2. developing institutions - schools - hospitals - orphanages - churches
Nuns 1. Schools 2. Hospitals 3. Orphanages 4. Nursing Homes
Jesuits - education of boys - conversion of Indians
Two Types of Growth 1. Population growth as a result of NATURAL INCREASE - 1666 = 3, 215 inhabitants - 1759 = 70, 000 inhabitants
2. Territorial Expansion as a result of continued exploration for the fur trade
