Plymouth 1620 The Mayflower Pilgrims praying before setting sail • Founded by the Pilgrims for religious reasons. • Pilgrims were persecuted in England because of their religious practices. • Pilgrims received charter from James I to start colony in Virginia. • Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, Mass instead. NOT Plymouth rock!
The Mayflower Compact Signing of the Mayflower Compact The Mayflower Compact • First example of self government in the colonies. • Pilgrims agreed on majority rule. • Pilgrims would obey the decisions made by majority. • Pilgrims signed the Compact before they got off the ship.
