Bell Ringer • New England Colonies: Area north of the middle colonies, settled by Puritans from England. • Then, take out your note sheet from yesterday & turn in homework
Review • Who settled the Southern colonies? • What type of religions were present in the Middle colonies?
Religion • New England was settled by Puritans- radical Protestantsfrom England • “saved” if they prayed, lead moral lives
Religion • Puritans came from all social classes- mostly middle class • Had to leave England because of religious persecution BUT they were not tolerant of religions themselves
Massachusetts • 1620 Puritans came over on the Mayflower • Plymouth Colony was settled • Mayflower Compact- form a government and obey law
Massachusetts • John Winthrop helped to settle Government was radical- men elected governor and assemblies
Salem Witch Trials • Persecuted witches for “evil magic” • Salem, Massachusetts: tried and convicted, executed 19 witches
Salem Witch Trials • Only stopped when members of prominent families were accused
Climate • Cold Winters • Rugged landscape • Short Growing Season: So, not a lot of farming- mainly small farms
Economy • Couldn’t make enough money off of farmed goods • Did export lumber and fish • Boston major seaport
Social Life • Few Africans living in New England • Middle Class families moved to New England • Equal balance of men and women
Social Life • Education was more available • “grammar school” for boys • “dame school” for girls
