New Construction Major Renovations and Building Additions September
New Construction, Major Renovations and Building Additions September 24, 2020
What we will cover? • How do we look at these? • Custom – Normal • Prescriptive • Common and Less Common Measures • Process Equipment • Recent Project Overview • Rooftop Unit Guidance National Grid 2
How do we look at these: • Custom – Normal Review • Prescriptive Gas – You can submit gas prescriptive applications in most cases as long as there is a valid account and one bill has been paid. National Grid 3
Custom - Normal Review • This method requires a more information up front than the retrofit or add-on projects. • A standard project requires the following: - Completed Application, if lighting just the proposed case. - Cutsheets for the proposed equipment - W-9 - Energy Saving Model (more on this next slide). • In addition to the above we need the following: - Baseline costs ◦ We have general numbers we can use for Lighting and Rooftop units. - Patience National Grid 4
Custom - Normal Review continued We evaluate measures against the 2020 Energy Conservation Code of NYS. However, If the design team chooses they can design towards ASHRAE 90. 1. The argument for providing an energy saving model: • An energy saving model is technically a program requirement. • If none is provided we typically default to the tech manual calculations, which are conservative. • If something innovative is being done we may not capture it using this methodology. National Grid 5
Prescriptive Measures – Heating Equipment National Grid 6
Prescriptive Measures - Continued • Please work with the sales group for these projects. • Apply for these at rebatesee. com National Grid 7
Prescriptive Measures – Instant Rebate Kitchen Equipment Upstate NY Downstate NY Specific vendors that supply the equipment will take the rebate off the invoice. National Grid 8
Common and Less Common Measures Basic Measures o Lighting o HVAC o Electric – Rooftop Units, Chillers, AHUs o Gas – anything from the prescriptive catalog, more on this during the RTU discussion. o Building Envelope – I have had zero success with this. Measures we would like to see more. • Heat Recovery • Refrigerated Cases • Control Strategies National Grid 9
Process Equipment What do we do if its not governed by NYS Energy Code? • What does the industry typically install? • What’s the bare minimum you would consider installing? National Grid 10
Recent Project Overview – Large Grocery Store Main Measures evaluated: • Refrigerated Cases • Lighting • Micro – DS • Heat Recovery Electric Savings: 1, 007, 736 k. Wh Gas Savings: 28, 017 Therms Incentive: $198, 769 National Grid 11
Rooftop Unit Guidance • SEER, IEER, and EFLHcooling • EFLHcooling must be above 800 to have a chance. (found in appendix G of the TRM) National Grid 12
Rooftop Guidance - Continued So what does all that nonsense mean? Small Commercial Cooling EFLH National Grid Large Commercial Cooling EFLH 13
Rooftop Guidance - Continued So what does all that nonsense mean? Small Commercial Cooling EFLH National Grid Large Commercial Cooling EFLH 14
Rooftop Guidance - Continued Other recipes for success: • Focus on larger units (7. 5 tons and over) • The submitted equipment should exceed code requirements • • SEER – exceed by 1. 5 • IEER – exceed by 1. 5 Incremental cost should be within 15% - 20% of proposed case. National Grid 15
Rooftop Unit Guidance - Continued Can we do anything on the gas side? • For most Rooftop Units – No • Condensing Rooftop Units - Maybe National Grid 16
Rooftop Guidance - Continued What can we do if we have an RTU that doesn’t meet the criteria? • VFDs • Demand Control Ventilation (not during a pandemic) National Grid 17
