View > Statuses The new Statuses feature will allow instructors to customize the statuses of assignment submissions in the gradebook.
What the Late Status Means • Late – If a student submits the assignment after the due date, the assignment is identified as late. • Typically, these assignments will not have set Available Until date or the Available Until date is set later than the due date. • The late tag will display in Speed. Grader and on students’ grade page. • Instructors can setup the late policies so an automatic value is recorded for the late assignment.
What the Missing Status Means • Missing – If a student has not submitted the assignment by the due date and the assignment has a set available Until date (typical the same as the due date), the assignment is identified as missing. • Instructors can set missing policy to enter grade automatically once an assignment is determined as missing. • Please note regardless of the assignment setup, the missing tag will display in the Speed. Grader and grades page for students. • The missing tag will still display even the instructor has entered the assignments score in the gradebook. This can be changed in the grade detail tray by setting the status label to none.
Other Statuses • Resubmitted – If a student resubmitted an assignment, this will be indicated in the Speed. Grader for the instructor. Please note students will only see their last submission. • Dropped – This will occur when the assignment is part of drop rule in an assignment group or the assignment settings have been configured to drop the score from the total calculation. • Excused – The instructor has typed EX into the cell to excuse the assignment for the student. The excused assignment will not be included the total calculation.
How to Setup Assignments for Missing or Late Statuses The Missing and Late statuses require an assignment due date to be able to apply missing or late penalties. Edit the assignment settings to be sure you have the desired settings applied. due date to be able to apply a penalty. Missing Assignments If you don’t want to accept late assignments, be sure to set an Until date in the assignment settings. Make sure this date is the same as your due date. Students who don’t submit their assignments by the due date will be considered missing. If you apply a missing penalty, the students with missing assignments will have their scores update to your preferred penalty. Accepting Late Assignments If you wish to accept late assignments, do not include an Until date. The late penalty you apply will automatically update the students’ scores.
Gradebook Options (Late Policies) Late policies allow you to have numerical values automatically be entered in the gradebook for online submissions. See the FAQ for Late Policies in the Canvas Community for more details on how late policies work in the new gradebook.
