NHS Education for Scotland Background – Medical Revalidation • • • 5 -yearly process to renew a doctor’s licence to practice Officially launched in 2011/12 Applies to all doctors in the UK who hold a licence to practice Most doctors will be connected to a “Designated Body” (DB) Each DB (e. g. Health Board) must have a “Responsible Officer” (RO) • In Scotland, the RO is usually the Health Board’s Medical Director… • …except for Doctors in Training (DB = NHS Education for Scotland) 6

NHS Education for Scotland Overview of the appraisal process in Scotland • Doctors (Appraisees) added to SOAR by local administrative teams • Appraiser is assigned to appraisees • Appraiser and appraisee to liaise and agree meeting date/time/location • Appraiser creates meeting on SOAR • Appraisee completes and submits appraisal forms for sharing prior to meeting • Post-meeting, appraiser drafts the summary of the discussions into Form 4 • Appraisee reviews and approves (or makes change requests) Form 4 • Appraisal is concluded when Form 4 is approved 8
