- Big Idea President Mc. Kinley was assassinated shortly after he was re-elected for a second term by Leon Czolgosky, and Theodore Roosevelt took over the presidency. Roosevelt was an energetic and enthusiastic man that believed the U. S. should increase it power world wide. He established the “Open Door Policy” with China to guarantee trade and he pushed for the construction of the Panama Canal.
