2013 S&T Response (all relevant to neutrinos) • SBN: Significant progress has been made in developing a coherent short baseline neutrino (SBN) program. The SBN collaboration is developing. The proposal has PAC support. May want to further study coverage of the Mini. Boo. NE neutrino anomaly • Linac upgrade: Plan for MW upgrade has been chosen solidifying LBN plan • SCD: has made some strides towards leveraging international neutrino resources, but much to do.
Neutrino Program • The current experimental neutrino program is quite strong, with 3 running experiments and another ready to turn on. • PIP is making good progress, important Booster milestones to meet over the next year • The program over the next few years continues to be exciting, leading to LBN • The R&D and test beam program is strong • Plans for improving proton flux are encouraging
Organization • Reorganization of the Lab to support an internationalized SBN/LBN is making good progress • While there is much more to do, appropriate steps are being taken • The new Neutrino Division has made good progress and ideas for the FNAL Neutrino Platform are taking shape.
Cross-cuts with Theory and SCD • Plans for the hire of a neutrino physicist by theory group are sound • Goals for additional software support of LAr. Soft (physicists with software experience) by SCD are good. Additional work in support of internationalized S&C resources is encouraged.
Internationalization • Fermilab should continue to work towards the new paradigm of an internationalized program centered on SBN/LBN, including: – Improved logistical support for Users (housing, offices) – Prepare for possible increase in needs for visa advice – Support of experiments – Communication and transparency – Software and computing support for distributed Users – Augmented neutrino theory
Management Challenge • assure the US neutrino community a stake in the new LBN detectors • internalize throughout the Lab the importance of internationalization and transition to the LBN flagship • manage expectations amongst all stakeholders (HEP community, agency and government) in the US and abroad regarding LBN. • Secure the $$$, CHF, £, ¥, • Articulate the plan for the next 5– 10 years in transitioning to the internationalized neutrino program
Summary • Neutrino cross-cuts are extensive throughout the Lab. Reorganization is ongoing. • The ambitious scientific plan over the next two decades is exciting • Significant progress is being made on many fronts
