Neutralization Reactions Acid Base Salt Water Neutralization Reactions
Neutralization Reactions: Acid + Base Salt + Water
Neutralization Reactions When an acid is added to a base, the hydrogen ion from the acid combines with the hydroxide ion from the base to form water. The cation from the base then combines with the anion from the acid to form a salt. Ex. HCl + Na. OH Na. Cl + H 20
Neutralization Reactions Can be used to determine concentrations of solutions through a process known as a titration. Equation: na Ma Va =nb Mb Vb is used to calculate the unknown concentration. › n is the mole ratio value › M is the molarity › V is the volume (from the balanced chemical equation)
Steps: Add a measured volume of the solution with the UNKNOWN concentration to a flask. 2. Add an Acid-Base indicator to the flask. 3. Fill a buret with a solution of KNOWN concentration. Record the initial volume of the buret. 4. Use the buret to add small amounts of the known solution to the flask until the unknown solution just barely changes color. 5. Measure the volume of solution added to the flask. 6. Use n M 1 V 1 =n M 2 V 2 to calculate the unknown concentration. Remember: One solution is a base, the other an acid. 1.
